Baby Highland Cow Passes Away
Donation protected
Our hours-old Highland Baby Calf died this morning at an unknown time.
Oatmeal, our white Highland cow, has been pregnant for the last 9 months. We've been checking on her eagerly over the last few weeks, anxious and excited to finally be introduced to her sweet baby. We weren't sure when she would give birth, so we made sure to spend lots of time around her as often as possible to increase our chances of being able to help her if needed, especially over the last few days.
Early on Thanksgiving morning, we were not present as she gave birth to a beautiful, healthy white female calf.
Upon arrival at the farm, the owners found that Oatmeal had delivered her baby, but that it was nowhere to be found. They frantically looked everywhere and eventually discovered her lying lifeless in a muddy ditch. They worked to revive her, but it was too late and hope was lost.
It appears this tragedy happened due to a spook that caused some of the cows to run through an electric fence (including our newborn calf), and the baby girl was separated from her mother. She got stuck deep in the mud, and being only a few hours old, did not have the strength to pull herself out and drowned in minutes.
This is a heartbreaking loss being felt by our whole family and anyone who has come to love our cows as much as we do. This was not something that any of us could have anticipated. We have had several healthy births on our farm and truly believed that Oatmeal's sweet baby girl would be no different.
We were rejoicing with Oatmeal as she was entering the final stages of her first pregnancy, and now we mourn with her as she suffers the loss of her firstborn baby. This is an experience that no mother should have.
We are seeking funding to improve farm infrastructure to ensure this NEVER happens again.
Funds will be used to build permanent fences to ensure newborn calves are kept safe with their mothers.
If you have extra money this holiday season to spare, we hope you would please consider donating to our farm so that we have the means to prevent a tragedy like this from happening again.
Thank you all for your love and support through everything.
