Highland Perthshire Welcomes Ukraine
HPWU is a community organisation, completely run by volunteers and supported by voluntary donations and grants. We are a group, consisting of local volunteers, sponsors, businesses and others with the aim to help the community extend a warm welcome to any Ukrainian Nationals who would like to relocate to a beautiful part of Scotland.
The organisation was formed when a group of local Highland Perthshire residents came together to help support refugees and provide a welcome to this beautiful area.
Our vision is to provide safe homes and a strong support network for refugee families in Highland Perthshire. We hope to encourage Ukrainian nationals to build a community here, by providing access to job opportunities, and helping with transition to and information about the area, including support for children and adults.
All those involved are working in a voluntary capacity including supporting admin and visa support, media, fund raising, welcome packages, transport, website, co-ordinating businesses and language support. Over thirty volunteers are working as part of the group to date. We are developing resources for refugees and sponsors, signposting to essential support services, including benefits, education and healthcare. None of this is associated with any costs and is all being done by volunteers.
We are currently focused on supporting refugees fleeing Ukraine. Many of those we are currently hoping to support are still in Ukraine, others are in refugee camps up and down the border, and others are in Poland or nearby countries on a temporary basis.
We are working through the UK government Homes for Ukraine scheme.
As well as transport to bring families from Ukraine to Scotland, we need funding to help support the transition and set up once people arrive. This includes coats, clothing including school uniforms, shoes and more, as well as medication, toiletries and basic household goods that none of our families have brought with them when they fled their country. We are working hard in the community to try and provide as much of this by sharing what we have, but there are admin and other costs involved in setting families up.
Some of our funding will be used to set up a dedicated hub for refugees in the area with IT support and space to use as needed.
None of our staff is paid, the organisation is run 100% voluntarily by people in the local community, as well as those families hoping to come to Scotland.
We are aware there are several organisations nationally and locally looking for your support. Every penny you donate will be spent to facilitate and support those most in need, to ensure their trip here is processed as quickly as possible, as well as painlessly as possible a transition into the community. Settling in the community, very specific to this area.
100 percent of our funding will be used for any spend required, we have no staff and everyone’s time is donated free of charge.
