Riding to save lives
A dedicated group of cyclists will be making their way across parts of rural South Australia in October to highlight awareness about mental health and raise funds for Beyond Blue.
This year Hill’s Heroes will be riding hundreds of kilometres in a quest to help others who battle with issues such as depression and anxiety with the aim of raising $50,000.
The idea began five years ago when founder Tyron Hill underwent a second knee reconstruction - he wanted to set a goal which would keep him busy and help him deal with his recovery.
Tyron, who grew up in Murray Bridge, South Australia, was living in Barooga, NSW, at the time.
After enticing some riders to hit the pedals the group began fundraising and soon left Barooga for an 800km ride to Adelaide for the experience of a lifetime.
After two successful rides in 2015 and 2017 and raising $75,000, Hill’s Heroes is about to take to the road again, travelling from Murray Bridge and looping around across the Murraylands, Mallee, Riverland and Fleurieu Peninsula.
The riders will stay overnight in country towns, mostly at sporting clubrooms, where there may be fundraisers such as sausage sizzles and auctions - all the while talking about personal experiences and mental health issues.
This year’s ride will start at Murray Bridge on October 6 and finish there on October 11. The stages include:
Day 1 (Sunday, Oct 6) - Murray Bridge to Lameroo
Day 2 (Monday, Oct 7) - Lameroo to Renmark
Day 3 (Tuesday, Oct 8) - Renmark to Blanchetown
Day 4 (Wednesday, Oct 9) - Blanchetown to Williamstown
Day 5 (Thursday, Oct 10) - Williamstown to Victor Harbor
Day 6 (Friday, Oct 11) - Victor Harbor to Murray Bridge
Any person or business who would like to be a sponsor, support crew or rider is welcome.
