SYNOPSIS:

It’s about a girl named Polly, who is rudely awakened to an insidiously fat phobic society that she was kind of out of touch with for a while. Her eyes are opened to all the microaggressions, the backhanded compliments, and all the things that just make every plus size woman feel so small. The story that I’m telling is one that is really personal and sometimes I struggle with seeing my own experiences and thoughts and feelings as important. But, a lot of the things that Polly goes through along this journey are things that I've experienced myself. A lot of the things that she hears are things that I’ve heard. And the ways that she’s treated are ways that I’ve been treated before. But one of the things I love about Polly is that she knows she’s enough. She’s confident, she doesn’t back down, she’s a go-getter. I think of Polly as this girl that I oftentimes wish I could be. A girl that I haven't always been but have sometimes caught glimpses of in myself. This girl who speaks her mind. This girl who doesn’t let other people tell her who she should be. This girl who feels like she can conquer the world and the things that she wants to do. Which is very fitting since her name is Hippolyta. If you don’t know, Hippolyta was the daughter of Aries, the god of war, and she was also the queen of the amazons. Aries gifted her something, a magical girdle that when she wore it, it gave her superpowers and it saddens me to think how we have warped this symbol of empowerment into a symbol of oppression especially with plus size women. And, Polly, in this story, fights back against every negative stereotype that has been imposed on plus size people for decades. So, please consider donating what you can to the making of Hippolyta!
