Historic Plaque at Miriam Toews's Former Home in Steinbach
Donation protected
Born and raised in Steinbach, writer Miriam Toews has authored many important works, often boldly reflecting on life in southern Manitoba. For her efforts, she has received accolades around the world for books such as A Complicated Kindness, All My Puny Sorrows, Women Talking, Swing Low: A Life and many others. Within her hometown, however, she has not yet been honoured in any significant way. Here is our opportunity to change that.
We have a chance to team up with the new homeowners and place a historic plaque outside the house where Toews spent her teen years. This is the same house she immortalized as the "low brick bungalow out on highway number twelve" in the opening lines of A Complicated Kindness.
Our intention is that the plaque will be similar to other bronze historic plaques in Steinbach and will be approximately 10" by 14" and placed on a rock/boulder in the front yard near the sidewalk. The text will summarize Toews's literary contributions and her connection to the home.
Please join us in honouring Steinbach's literary icon Miriam Toews.
