Historical Marker for Grace Julian Clarke

Donation protected
As a Public History grad student at IUPUI, I wrote my Master's thesis on Grace Julian Clarke and her emergence as a political actor between 1915-1920.

Funds raised through this campaign will be used to pay for a state historical marker, administered by the Indiana Historical Bureau, to be installed outside of the Julian home on S. Audubon Rd in honor of Grace Julian Clarke. Grace's father built this house upon relocating to Irvington from Washington, D.C. and Clarke continued to live here throughout her adult life with her husband, Charles. She hosted notable figures at the house, including Susan B. Anthony, and the home was described as a "mecca" for club women around the state and other states.

The $3,000 covers the marker, the post, shipping and delivery. Funds need to be raised by mid-August in order to be able to dedicate the marker in November 2020.

Located in one of the most walkable parts of Irvington, installing a historic marker in front of the house will allow residents to honor a brilliant trailblazer from their own community and educate passersby on their neighborhood's rich history. All funds raised will go toward the creation and installation of the marker, which will be dedicated to the public on Nov. 7, 2020 in conjunction with a talk that I will be giving on Clarke at the Irvington Historical Society.

As many Irvingtonians likely already know, Clarke served as president of the Indiana Federation of Clubs between 1909-11. She initially elevated her status among both women and men as a campaign manager for the Federation's 1915 presidency election, and later pushed for consolidation of state and national clubs in the fight for women's suffrage. She was personally motivated by her father's work toward human equality while he was a U.S. Congressman. During WWI, her newspaper column in The Indianapolis Star titled "Women's Clubs" kept Hoosiers informed of war-related club activities. In 1917, Clarke became a "fourteen-minute woman" who spoke on behalf of food conservation around the state. She also sought cooperation between the National Council of Defense and women's clubs to demand the vote. After WWI, Clarke spoke in support of the League of Nations for the National Democratic Party.

Your support for this historical marker would mean an incredible deal to me. As a Public Historian, it's my goal to bring history to the public. This marker would allow my research to live beyond a written thesis and be seen by the public eye for decades to come. In order to contribute to Clarke's legacy in this way,  I would greatly appreciate any financial assistance you may be able to provide. Irvington is a beautiful community with residents who are incredibly passionate about their history, and I'd love to help share that story. Thank you!
