Hit-and-Run Victim Sally Needs Your Help

Donation protected
Sally McMullin is an angel-on-earth to many underprivileged, under-resourced elementary- and secondary-age children through her role as Executive Director of the “I Have A Dream” Foundation – Dallas.  Treating these kids as her own, she helps ensure that the zip code they’re born in doesn’t define their opportunity for success in school and life.  Sally is a woman of faith.  She is a “giver”, not a “taker”, which explains why it took a little arm-twisting to allow us to start this page.

On Thursday, June 13, Sally was a victim of a “hit-and run” accident.  She was struck by an SUV while crossing the street on foot at a 3-way intersection with no traffic light to reach a bus stop (she has no car).  Then, in her words, “I feel like I saw the grill of a car on me in a moment as it was happening; as if they gunned it and I couldn’t react.  Next moment I know I am on the ground looking down at my leg screaming and EXTREMELY SCARED that the oncoming cars were not going to see me, and I was going to be hit.”  The impact was so powerful that she was thrown 10-20 feet.    The driver of the SUV failed to stop and render aid….a felony.  Luckily, others did, police arrived, a woman knelt to pray over her, and Sally was transported by ambulance to Methodist Hospital ER with a broken femur, two broken ribs, and horrific road rash on her face, arms, shoulders, back and legs.

Sally was placed in traction for a couple of days to align the bone before surgery could be done to insert a rod into her shattered femur.  Sally was hospitalized for six days and is now home, where she lives alone.  Changing the dressings on her wounds is a terribly painful, nurse-assisted, 2-hour daily event even now.

Being one of two employees at her foundation, Sally has no health insurance and is modestly compensated.  As a hit-and-run victim, she doesn’t have access to the unknown driver’s insurance, if any.  Much of what she earns goes toward personally helping fulfil her mission.  We don’t know what the eventual cost of Sally’s medical care will be, but we do know it will be huge, and WAY beyond what Sally can afford to pay.  We do know one thing, because we know Sally:  Should funds be raised that more than cover her medical expenses, the remainder will be used to do good things for others in need.
