Hiyabu Gebremedhin Hiyabu Memorial Fund

Dear Family and Friends,

Our brother Hiyabu Gebremedhin Hiyabu passed away on November 5, 2022, at the age of 65, after suffering from a terminal illness for some months. His funeral service is scheduled for Thursday, November 17, 2022.

Family members and friends have expressed their desire to contribute towards funeral expenses. I have created this GoFundMe account to fulfill this noble desire and tradition of bringing family and friends in good and bad times. I am doing this in consultation with family members.

Brief History of Hiyabu

Hiyabu was born on January 29, 1957, in Abeytgakha, a village near Keren, Eritrea. He was raised in Elabered, Eritrea, by the Gebreselassie Hiyabu family from his early childhood because of his father’s untimely death. Hiyabu attended the Italian elementary school in Elabered. He later attended another Italian school in Asmara, Eritrea.

In the late 1970s, because of the worsening situation related to the struggle for independence, Hiyabu was forced to flee to Sudan with many Eritreans. In Sudan, he worked in various capacities for good companies until he emigrated to the United States as a refugee in the mid-1980s, and he settled in Southern California.

After about a decade in the US, Hiyabu was confronted with many life challenges that he was unable to cope with and went through so many difficulties that impacted his life until his death a week ago at the Rancho Los Amigos National Rehabilitation Center in Downey, California. Prior to his death, Hiyabu was happy to be visited and anointed by our esteemed Pastor, Father Tesfaldet Tekie.

Your contributions through GoFundMe will be administered by my brother Tesfaledet Gebreselassie and me (Hiab Gebreselassie) and will be used for necessary expenses related to his funeral.
