HM-18 NW 601 Memorial Fund
Donation protected
On June 19th, 1992, an RH-53D Sea Stallion from Helicopter Mine Countermeasures Squadron 18, based at Naval Air Station Norfolk, Virginia, expereienced a catastrophic rotor head failure in flight, destroying the aircraft and killing all seven crew members.
They were:
LCDR Greg Bingeman, LT Ken Steen, AMEC David Romesburg, AZC Randy Vandiver, AMS1 David Redland, AMH1 Stacey Mills, and AEAN Randy Hopkins.
Over time the temporary markers memorializing this tragic event have deteriorated and disappeared.

As the 25th anniversary of this mishap approaches, we, a small group of former squadron members, are planning to dedicate a permanent memorial marker as part of the H-53 display just inside of Gate 4 at Naval Air Station Norfolk. This display already includes markers memorializing crews from Helicopter Mine Countermeasures Squadron 14 and Helicopter Combat Support Squadron 4.
Our intent is to use the campaign funds for a marker similar to the artist's rendering below, which will be very similar to the existing HM-14 marker.
