Hi my name is Morgan Urick and i just turned 23, as many of you know the last few years have thrown me more curveballs than i knew was possible. I was lucky enough to find my passion in life very early. I joined the fire department in high school and immediately caught the “bug”, the second I walked into the rescue station I knew that is what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. I got my EMT and FF certifications and was lucky enough to meet some of the most amazing people who became phenomenal mentors for me. I have struggled with my health since I was in middle school but it was relatively controlled. About a year and a half after graduation from high school I had my paramedic certification and moved down to Charleston to work as a paramedic. I started to look at joining FDs as well but my health began to deteriorate so with much restraint I held back from resuming firefighting. Unfortunately my health began to spiral out of control with multiple surgeries and hospital admissions. I became tube fed, which was suppose to be temporary but it has been almost two years, i had a vascular compression in my abdomen (MALS) that required a very invasive open abdominal surgery that we traveled to Boston for, shortly after that i was diagnosed with a genetic connective tissue disorder known as EDS. The pots that I have had since middle school began to spiral out of control as well and I survive off of tube feeds, Iv fluids and IV nausea medications. These conditions also cause my heart rate to increase to unsafe numbers and very low blood pressure which can lead to passing out and making it unsafe for me to be alone. I have been able to have the independence that every young adult wants, but that is also being taken away from me. I have to take a step back from the job I love, and I am asking for donations for a service dog. This service dog would help me with blood sugar alerts, high heart rate alerts (to mitigate passing out), and object retrieval, and help me be able to be more independent. Unfortunately, this is not a cheap adventure, and I am asking for any donations and will be very grateful. Thank you all who have been there along the way.
