For the first time in 12 years, Australia is sending a hockey team to the 2017 Maccabiah Games.
Nicknamed the HockeyJews, the team comprises the best Jewish hockey players in Australia and will compete against teams from all over the world.
This year the team is looking to win Gold - and we need your support!
The coaches and management:
Michelle Tremigliozzi (Manager)- Michelle is a mother of two teenage boys who both play hockey. Although she has never played the game, she has been a loyal supporter of the games and now is the team manager for this squad. She is looking forward to taking the team overseas and supporting them in competing in an international competition.
Mike Aronson (Assistant Manager) - Mike played for Australia in the first hockey competition at the 11th Maccabiah (1981), winning a bronze medal, and became chairperson of the Australian Field Hockey Team for the 14th & 15th Maccabiah. Michael was appointed an Assistant Team Manager for the 17th Maccabiah (2005) and became the Team Manager for the 18th Maccabiah (2009).He has played over 750 games, mainly in defence, and is passionate about hockey continuing to be played by Australia at the Maccabiah games.
The team:
Marc Aarons a.k.a Marco or Chef (Defender) - Marc has played hockey since he was 5. The veteran of the team he doubles up as both a player and head coach of Maccabi Hockey Club. He is an old fashioned defender who puts his body on the line and will do anything (and we mean anything) to keep the ball out. A good leader on the field but truly magical on penalty corners. Watch him hit the backboard in 2017.
Mark Bloom a.k.a Bloomy (Defender) - Mark has been a one-club player for Maccabi from his youth. Not a prolific goal-scorer, he believes his best impact on the scoreboard is the zero next to the opponent's name. A strong performance at the 2017 Maccabiah Games offers him the chance to win back the right to use his first name on the field, after years of playing with many "Mark" teammates.
Adam Bogatin a.k.a The Bogat (Stiker) - The only returning member from the 2005 Games, Adam is here to correct the ledger and finally take home Gold. He can often be found recounting and reliving the good times of the past and telling people how fast he was. The Peter Pan of the team, with 25 years of playing experience but still yet to grow up! Looking forward to fast, tough, hockey and creating memories to last a life time.
Shane Campbell a.k.a Cambo (Midfielder) - Shane is a strong midfielder who excels at passing and reading play. He has played for years in the Victorian Premier League and has represented Victoria in Indoory Hockey. He is looking forward to going to Israel and competing with a great group of people in an amazing competition.
Andrew Coleman a.k.a Ice (Striker) - Andrew just finished his season with the Sydney University Hockey Club where he ended up as the club's top goal scorer. When Andrew isn't injured he likes to think of himself as a fast, clinical, winger with an eye for the goal. Spectator opinions often differ.
Ethan Faifer a.k.a Faif (Goalkeeper) – Ethan hails from a small island in the oceanic religion, Australia. He has been trained in the mystical art of goalkeeping. While on the field Ethan is clad in state of the art impact armour and wields a mighty curved sword and shield. With his training and high tech equipment, Ethan brings not only a rock hard defence but also a tactical mind when coordinating his team’s defence. Ethan looks forward to competing with the Hockeyjews in the 2017 Maccabiah games and having fun in the land of milk and honey.
Jarred Grek a.k.a Grek or Gek (Striker) - Jarred is known for his curls and electric pace down the wing. You can always rely on him to handle the heat and pressure. Look out for the dashing curls along the wing throughout the 2017 Maccabiah games, you won't be disappointed.
Charles Hamilton a.k.a Chazzaman (Striker) - Charles was once regarded as a very prominent hockey player back in his junior career. As some may say his work ethic was just not up to scratch, however it can definitely be assured that this young gun still has the tricks in the trade and should not be taken lightly.
Joel Hamilton a.k.a Hammo (Midfielder) - Joel is a talented midfielder who just happens to play for the wrong club. A strong showing in the Victorian Premier League saw the Steven Gerrard of the HockeyJews miss out on the winners medal, going down in the final. The team hopes he can do better now he is surrounded by some serious quality. Will a better manager result in some goals for this misplaced genius? Or will the trophy he deserves haunt him into retirement?
Simon Krampel a.k.a Kramps (Utility) - the eldest statements of the team, Kramps brings big game and tournament experience. He has been around the hockey world for two decades and is participating in his second Maccabiah Games and is keen to improve on the teams bronze medal in 2005.
Lawrence Lifson a.k.a Lawrie, not Laurie (Midfielder) - Lawrence is a one club player with Maccabi, calmly wreaking havoc from the half line for many years. He is best known for his ability to open up the game with an incisive pass. Lawrence is looking forward to getting onto the hallowed turf in Israel after hearing teammates stories for the last 15 years. He has a proud 100% record of missing penalty strokes.
Jeremy Robin a.k.a Jerry (Midfielder) - Jeremy is known for his commitment and work ethic having played hockey since he was 8 for Maccabi. The now 31 year old loves giving it his all on the field and having a laugh off it. He hopes that his first Maccabi Games will be one to remember and hopefully he can bring gold to Australia.
Dion Verstandig a.k.a Dijon (Striker) - Dion prides himself on his work ethic and natural ability. He will the be the first to admit that he doesn't mind a cheeky sausage, so don't be surprised if you see him get on the end of a few and celebrate with his trademark finger twirl. Also know for his lavish looks, he plans to cause some damage off the field in Tel Aviv.
Bryce Watson a.k.a BP or Gibbs (Attacking Midfield) - Bryce has been a one-club player for Maccabi for over 13 years. Bryce isn't so much the one who scores the goals, but rather the player providing the assist. After missing out on the last Maccabiah Games when no Australian Hockey Team went, Bryce wants to make up for lost time and hopes to bring home a medal.
Ari Wytwornik a.k.a Witters (Defender) - The Thunder from Down Under, The Man Mountain, The Human Wall. Harder to get through than the Israeli border patrol. As strong as an Ox and ready to prove it to the world. Raw eggs, protein bars, shin pads and a hockey stick, Witters provides the second half of the bruising HockeyJews centre-backs.
