The Teddy Bear Project assists the following categories of children in Sierra Leone with recreational and educational needs. These children include: Children whose parents endure amputation during the period of conflicts in Sierra Leone, Children Orphaned by the Ebola Crises, and children who face other socio-economic challenges.
children whose parents were victims of the flood and mudslide and children who were orphaned by the flooding and mudslides in Sierra Leone, children who live in challenging communities impacted by socio-economic problems and poverty such as children in ghettos, street children, etc.
The goals of this project are as follows:
1. to build self-esteem and encourage kids through recreation and education
2. to show these kids that people do care and they are not alone in the event of all the tragedies that have happened.
3. to heal the traumatic experiences associated with post-war, post-Ebola, post-mudslide and flooding, as well as economic challenges
4. to show kids love, peace, hope, and generosity so when they grow up they will, in turn, practice these values.
5. To give these kids an opportunity to experience a holiday filled with hope and love, and impact them at the socio-educational level so that they will not feel left out and they will know that like other kids who had parents and can afford, they too 'have a chance to shine'.
6. Providing second chances to children who have faced ill-luck or bad choices.
History of the Project
The B-Gifted Foundation designed the Teddy Bear Project in the fall of 2010 as a way to reach children in post-war and crisis-struck Sierra Leone with a symbol of unconditional love. The goal for that year was to raise 40 Teddy Bears for kids living at Amputee camps and have them delivered with community support. Though initially a modest effort, the program vastly increased in scale when the Ebola outbreak occurred, destroying families and leaving many children orphaned'.
The show some love Teddy Bear project is bringing smiles and hopes to the kids in Sierra Leone through the gesture of gifts that include Teddy Bears, school bags, toys, baby dolls, soccer balls, cameras, and other kids' items. Our belief is that by sharing, we provide kids with the hope that someone does care and that they are not alone in the aftermath of all that happened during the Ebola outbreak, mudslides (flood) and post-war effects. In turn, kids will grow up with a sense of generosity, peace in their hearts and love, and eventually learn from this and 'pass it on'. Like other communities in Sierra Leone, we also wanted to do something to bring a smile to kids dealing with these aftermaths.
'This Project which uses Teddy Bear 'is a short annual event, which however leaves a lasting impression on the children it reaches. For many of these kids, it's their first toy, it's their first Teddy Bear and play dolls. The kids cherish it and so they hold on to their teddies for as long as they can, often years, receiving joy and comfort for the entire period — just think of how fond you were of your own teddy bear or favorite toy. Your support can make a real impact in the lives of many.
In our recent activities , we added books and school bags as well as pens, pencils and crayons, food and recreational games to show that we can share the gift of love and value education as an instrument to help liberate the kids from these challenges.
"And I was just like these kids. And knowing that I can give back that smile and pass it on one kid at a time, I was filled with joy and happiness, and the simple fact that I can help to bring that radiance and a glow, a smile and hope was at once reassuring.
With a generation of young people who have known only challenges and hardship caused by a multiplicity of factors, of war, Ebola, and recent flooding and hardship, I think that these moments of smiles and happiness will help them shed off that heavy burden of grief that they endure. In turn these children will have the nurturing experience of passing on the simple acts of kindness, love and compassion that is also exemplified and got through the warm embrace of a doll.
I hope that through those inspiring youth volunteers and our numerous friends we hope to continue to do that from Baltimore to Freetown to Bunce Island." -
