Building Fund for Jane and Finch Food Bank
Donation protected
We are seeking your support in helping us find a new home for our food bank located in the Jane and Finch community. Since the beginning of Society for the Living in 1998, our location at 274 Eddystone Avenue has been our home and a place of hope for many community members, including refugees, immigrants, seniors, and low-income families and individuals.
In May 2022, we received notice that our space had been sold and the rent would be increased by $2,387.48 monthly. As a small nonprofit making big impacts, we were unable to sustain this increase and forced to vacate in July 2022. Now we are left with no permanent home to serve our members in a dignified and community-centered way.
However, we remain dedicated to our work and recognize the need for food has alarmingly increased due to the impacts of Covid-19.
Currently serving approximately 2000 individuals per month, our food bank programs operate out of shipping containers at the Jane and Shepard Library and Oakdale Community Centre through our partnership with the City of Toronto and North York Harvest Food Bank.
Our hope for the future is that all families within our community can meet their food needs and that our food bank program will not be needed. Until then, we desire a space where those who need our service can have more of a grocery shopping (choice model) experience of accessing the food bank versus our current reality of lining up in the hot sun, snow, and rain to meet their food needs.
We are humbly seeking your support to find a new home. If you are interested in supporting us in any other way or have any community connections, please email us.
