George and Pink’s Vegetables — 2021 Dreams to Reality
George and Pink’s Vegetable Market; their home destroyed by fire in 2019
Part of Edisto Island
George and Pink’s Vegetables has been a part of the Edisto Island landscape since 1972, almost five decades! Island residents and vacationers have enjoyed fresh vegetables and the local, down-home flavor of this market for multiple generations. Autographed pictures on the wall from earlier days, including former Gov. Jim Hodges, Mark Sanford, and David Beasley, speak of its popularity since the early seventies. There's even a signed photo of former Clemson Head Basketball Coach, Oliver Purnell.
Located on Edingsville Beach Road, the market and seven-acre farm have been in Rosa ‘Pink’ Brown’s family for more than three generations—over one hundred years! Pink’s brother, Bobby, farms the land to provide in-season vegetables for the market, which Pink runs. Their home, located next to the vegetable market, was also over one hundred years old.

Tragedy Strikes
On August 19, 2019, tragedy struck the family at 2:00 am. They awakened to smoke and fire. Within minutes, the family lost their entire home and all their material possessions. Pink, George (her 93-year-old father), and Celestine (Pink’s sister), sleeping inside at the time, were able to escape. They stood outside watching their home and all its contents being destroyed by the fire. There was no insurance to cover the loss.

Floor Plan for New Home
Once we complete the construction of this home and provide the necessary furniture, all remaining funds will be given to the Edisto Island Home Mission Team (house repair projects on the Island) to support this vital Island ministry.
Will you join us and make this dream a reality?
There are two truths regarding a project of this scope: One person can’t do it all, but one person can make a huge difference! Will you be one of those? And, many hands make light work! With your gifts and volunteer hands we can restore George, Pink, and Celestine to their property and home.
What a lovely ‘Thank Offering’ to this family that has given us George and Pink’s Farm and Market for all these decades - summer, fall, winter, and spring; year-in and year-out.
Together, We Can Build a Home for This Special Edisto Family!

To Ensure Full Transparency
The Rev. Michael Lumpkin, a long-time home owner and now full-time resident on Edisto Island, is leading a team of Edisto residents to raise money and build a home for George and Pink. After losing their home to a fire in 2019, George and Pink's family had no insurance and does not have the funds to rebuild. George and Pink's Vegetables is an important fixture on Edisto, having provided fresh vegetables to residents and visitors for over 40 years - and we want to help them! Other team members include Fisher Walter, Van Leer Rowe, Kay Henry, Jerrel Jernigan, and Jim and Beth Berry. To provide funds and manage them wisely, we have opened a checking account at our Island bank, Enterprise Bank. The name on the account is the George and Pink House Fund. Funds will be disbursed only for construction expenses, and the team has established a protocol that two-person approval is required for any check over $1,000. The team also established a Financial Accountability Committee to monitor funds collected and disbursed. Kay Henry, treasurer of Trinity Episcopal Church, and Jim Berry, former banker, are committee members. After completion of the construction project, any surplus funds will be donated to the Edisto Island Home Mission Team to support this ministry that repairs homes on the Island.

The First Fire Fund
The original George and Pink Fire Fund was established in 2019 and raised $20,000. The Fire Fund has been utilized to pay for demolition and removal of the old house, removal of the septic tank, survey of the property and getting the title cleared in anticipation of replacing their home. $10,000 remains to be used towards the construction of a new home.

Homeless but for Family
The siblings, Pink and Celestine, as well as their elderly father, George, have been displaced since the devastating fire. They currently are living with family up the road in over-crowded conditions. As brother Bobby lovingly said, “That’s what family do!"
This wonderful family are descendants on their mother’s side of the Bleak Hall Plantation slaves. They have been here a long, long time.

The Rev. Albert ‘Chick’ Morrison, Pastor of New First Missionary Baptist Church on the Island, who has known them all his life (77 years!) wrote this of the Brown/Days family:
"George and his family have been pillars to the Edisto Island community, for the tourists who visit annually, as well as lifelong supporting members of the New First Missionary Baptist Church. George and his family have always given so much of themselves to the community, and now it is our turn to give back. They have been displaced by the devastation and because of limited means, have not been able to recover. We know that these are tough times, and the road to recovery is a long one but they need our help….."
Establishing the New Fund
For this worthy project, The George and Pink House Construction Team was created near the end of 2020. Members of the Committee are island residents Van Leer Rowe, Kay Henry, The Rev. Michael Lumpkin, and Jim & Beth Berry.
Fisher Walter of Walter Construction Company has graciously and enthusiastically offered his services as General Contractor. Jerrel Jernigan, Jim Berry and Clay Branham (all skilled home builders) are on board to provide construction help and lead volunteers where the opportunity for volunteers is practical. Also, John Girault of the Open Land Trust and Chelsea Ward of the Edisto Chamber of Commerce have provided start-up advice and guidance.
The George and Pink House Construction Team has created three sub-committees:
· Marketing and Fund-Raising—Mike Lumpkin, Van Leer Rowe and Beth Berry
· Construction—Jim Berry and Fisher Walter
· Financial Accountability—Kay Henry and Jim Berry
The Financial Accountability Committee will oversee the collection, disbursement, and security of all monies collected.

Project Goals
Project Goals
We have selected a house design that will meet the family’s requirements for four bedrooms, two full baths and handicap access into the house and within the house. The house will be 1222 square feet. It includes a great room with kitchen, dining and living space in an open house plan. We believe the cost to build this home will not exceed $190,000. Our fundraising goal is accordingly $190,000.
