Alfajiri: Helping the Street Kids of Nairobi, Kenya

Alfajiri is a non-profit organization serving homeless children in Nairobi, Kenya. These kids are living on the streets for a variety of reasons: death of parents, abuse in the home, lack of parents' ability to provide, etc. There are about 60,000 of them. They cannot afford to go to school and many people in the community view them as little more than pests or nuisances. Community members endorse and fund killer cops to try and get rid of the children by any means necessary. Occasionally, they will take matters into their own hands by offering poisoned food to the children. The life that these kids live is unimaginable. Alfajiri provides food, clothing, and resources to get children off the street and back into school. Since Alfajiri's inception 7 years ago, hundreds of children have been rescued from a hopeless life in the streets.

Trenton Dodds, Matt Anderson, Hayden Hedrington, and Jacob Lipke are Benedictine Volunteers working with Alfajiri. After 8 months of connecting with the kids, we believe that the best way for us to maximize our impact is to spread awareness and fundraise.
