Dear Friends,
On January 20, 2025, the world lost a bright and compassionate young man, Alfred Joseph Nyarko Okyere, in a tragic act of senseless violence. Born on August 16, 2001, in Kumasi, Ghana, Alfred was the beloved son of Charles Dickson and Ama Owusuaa, carrying with him the hopes of a promising future.
In September 2024, Alfred arrived as an international student eager to pursue his education and build a better life in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada. A devout Christian and an affiliate of the Church of Pentecost, Alfred quickly became known for his kind heart, gentle nature, and unwavering work ethic. He sought to balance his studies with part-time work, embodying the resilience and determination of many young people striving for a brighter future abroad.
Tragically, Alfred’s life was cut short less than four months after arriving in Canada. While working at a factory, where he had been employed for less than a week, Alfred was attacked and stabbed 17 times in a brutal and senseless act of violence. He was rushed to the hospital but was pronounced dead upon arrival. This devastating loss has left his family, friends, and the community in mourning, grappling with the shock of his untimely death.
We are coming together to honour Alfred’s memory and support his grieving family during this unimaginable time. Our goal is to raise funds to:
- Provide a Dignified Funeral and Memorial Service: To celebrate Alfred’s life and legacy in the community where he spent his final months, surrounded by those who cared for him.
- Support His Family: To ease the unexpected financial burden of this tragedy on his loved ones, offering them relief as they navigate their profound grief.
Alfred’s story is a testament to the strength and hope that international students bring with them when they leave home in search of opportunity. Despite the challenges of adapting to a new country, he carried himself with grace, humility, and determination. His life was tragically cut short, but his memory lives on as a reminder of the resilience and courage he embodied.
Your generosity will help us honour Alfred’s life with the dignity he deserves and provide much-needed support to his grieving family. Every contribution, no matter the size, is a profound act of solidarity and compassion that will ensure his memory is cherished.
Please join us in celebrating Alfred’s life, mourning his untimely passing, and standing with his family during this heartbreaking time. Together, we can show them they are not alone in their grief.
