Honor Katy Silverman's Legacy: Funeral Fund
Donation protected
I am Claudia Wold, Katherine Silverman's mom. After a long battle with Wilson's Disease, I lost my Katy last weekend.
For those of you who know me and Katy, or Katy and the kids, you know that my Katy had many hospitalizations and moves from nursing homes to the emergency room, to acute care and back. I was blessed to spend most of July with her, where I flew from my home in Washington, then again in September.
She was doing so well when I went home, but things went bad so suddenly. I know she is in a place where she is free of pain, free of sorrow, and can walk again, and I am trying to take comfort in that and be strong for the kids.
Because of all of the traveling expenses, and because neither she nor I could buy life insurance for her, I am asking for your help to finally lay my sweet Katy to rest. I am retired on social security, and these last three emergency trips were SO expensive.
If you didn't know Katy, she was an RN who treated patients on the frontlines of the pandemic during the first and worst wave of COVID-19. She caught it right away, treating older folks in a nursing home. She "recovered," and went back to work on the front lines again for about 18 months.
What we didn't know then was that Katy was one of those people with an underlying condition—Wilson's Disease, a disease where the liver cannot process copper, and it gets scarred over time. The doctors told us that COVID-19 attacks the weakest part of the body, and that is what happened to my girl. She collapsed one night after a shift and was in a coma for three months. The doctors and nurses got her back, but she could no longer walk or work. Since then, we hoped and prayed for a liver transplant, but my girl just got too sick.
My Katy was a fighter. She fought for all her patients on the frontlines, and she fought for her life just as hard. She hung on two and a half years past the doctors' predictions. We hoped and tried for a transplant, but sadly, she developed Addison's disease as well. Her poor body just couldn't fight anymore.
She leaves behind me, her three children, and a group of sincere and kind friends who stood in for me when I couldn't be here in Texas for her.
Will you please take the time today to help me lay my sweet Katy to finally rest?
