Honor Mary Thwaits with a Memorial Tree & Plaque

My name is Becca Turbeville (Sorensen) and on behalf of Alpha Epsilon Phi , Phi Tau Chapter (SUNY Plattsburgh), and Mary’s loving family,friends and Plattsburgh community, I am creating this Go Fund Me account for a memorial tree and plaque to honor our late sister, (Amanda) Mary Thwaits.

Mary was born on August 9th 1987, to Reginald Thwaits and Debbie Papier, of Plattsburgh, NY. Surrounded by so many that loved her, Mary passed away on Sept 3rd, 2024, following a courageous battle with breast cancer. She was 37 years young.

Mary grew up in the north country and went on to graduate from SUNY Plattsburgh in 2009; earning Bachelor’s degrees in Business & Business Economics, and Marketing & Entrepreneurship. She was an active member of Alpha Epsilon Phi sorority (Phi Tau Chapter), and so loved by all of her sisters and peers.

She showed more resilience and strength than most of us could ever fathom ; always with a smile and ultimate gratitude. Mary was a force; of love, compassion, empathy, loyalty and contagious positivity that radiated through anywhere she went. “She never met a stranger” as her mother Debbie says, as she has touched so many lives, far and wide, with her beautiful soul. We want nothing more than to honor her properly and continue spreading her courageous spirit and story of resilience, and her all encompassing genuine character that never wavered.

This tree will be on campus at SUNY Plattsburgh. In accordance with SUNY’s Memorial and Honorary policies, the cost to name a memorial tree is $1,500.00 which includes a 5 x 5 cast bronze plaque installed in front of the tree.

We are asking for donations that will go towards the cost of the tree naming & memorial plaque to honor Mary.

The plaque will include her name, sorority name, alma matter, and by request of the family we will have “breast cancer warrior,” next to her name.

Any money that surpasses the initial $1,500, will be donated to the Susan G. Komen organization, in honor of Mary .

Mary you are sorely missed and to her family and friends, we offer our deepest condolences. We loved her like a sister - that she was to us and cherish the time we had with her forever.
