Honor Melissa Hilliker's Legacy: Support Her Family

Tax deductible
Melissa Hilliker (Kroll) and her husband, Dana, believed they had completed their family with their two daughters, Sydney (13) and Josie (11). However, in 2021, they were surprised to learn they were expecting another child. Melissa embraced the prospect of becoming a mother again, maintaining a healthy lifestyle that included balanced nutrition, CrossFit, and prenatal vitamins.

During a 20-week ultrasound, a suspicious lump was detected, prompting Melissa to undergo further scans and a biopsy. In December 2021, she received a diagnosis of metastatic breast cancer at the age of 37. Given the complexities of her pregnancy, conventional treatments such as radiation and hormone therapy were not advisable. As a result, she began chemotherapy during her third trimester, completing four rounds of treatment; however, the tumor did not respond as hoped.

After consultation with her medical team, Melissa made the decision to breastfeed her newborn daughter, Savannah, using her unaffected left breast. Subsequently, she underwent surgery to remove six lymph nodes and her right breast, followed by additional treatments once Savannah was born.

Despite early detection and an aggressive treatment plan—including mastectomy, lymphadenectomy, radiation, and chemotherapy—Melissa's cancer progressed rapidly. Throughout her illness, Melissa remained positive and dedicated to spending quality time with her husband, children, parents, brother, and in-laws, despite significant pain and the inability to continue working.

Many knew Melissa as a compassionate and highly respected nurse specializing in pediatric cardiac critical care. Her dedication and kindness made a meaningful difference in the lives of her young patients and their families, brightening their hospital experiences with her caring spirit.

Outside of her professional life, Melissa was a devoted wife and mother. She took great pride in watching her daughters excel in gymnastics, homeschooling, and Bible study, as well as celebrating Savannah's milestones as she grew.

Both Melissa and Dana have committed their lives to serving the community, with Dana currently working as a detective for the City of Orlando Police Department. The Hilliker family is actively engaged in Lakeside Church and holds a strong faith in God.

On October 21, 2024, Melissa passed away at home, surrounded by her family, at the age of 39. During this difficult time, we invite prayers and financial support for the Hilliker family. All contributions will directly assist the family and enable Dana to take time off work to be with their daughters.

Melissa was a true fighter, exhibiting remarkable strength and resilience. She took the initiative to educate herself about her diagnosis and treatment options and advocated for her care while continuing to embrace life. She exemplified the importance of finding purpose in each day, inspiring those around her to cherish every moment.

Now, it is our turn to support her legacy.

All contributions are tax deductible and will directly assist the family and enable Dana to take time off work to be with their daughters.
