Seven members of the family of a dear co-worker were murdered in one night earlier this month in Kabul, Afghanistan. Intruders broke into the family home while the head-of-the-house/uncle and his sons were at evening prayer. These heartless criminals took the lives of three woman, two young girls, and a baby about a week from being delivered. The perpetrators waited almost 2 hours for the return of the men. The uncle and one son fought off the attackers enough to allow 2 brothers to escape death, losing their lives in the attempt. As the motive for the crime is a mystery (and really NO motivation would be justified under any circumstances), your help is crucial in funding the cost of visas and travel for the surviving family members in eminent danger who are seeking protection from further violence. Nothing can be done to completely erase the horror of this event, but we can honor those killed by assuring their loved ones find sanctuary in a safer country as soon as possible. The two young men severely injured in the attack are expected to make a full recovery. It would be ideal to have the funds available immediately so that visas and other paperwork are completed before they are released and ready to travel. A tribute to the family and more information is below. Thanks in advance for giving hope to this special family….
We remember the victims senselessly murdered on the 21st night of Ramadan, 2019:
• The head-of house and uncle of my coworker (HN), a 54 year old who worked as a driver for the US Embassy and several non-profit, humanitarian organizations. Known for his devotion to his religion and efforts on behalf of the poor.
• His wife of 30 years, (NN), a respected headmistress at a local school. Loved by her 5 children and her grandchildren, too many of whom were killed in the attack.
• Their son (AN), 27 year old father of two who went to the mosque with his father and his two brothers for prayer on the 21st night of Ramadan. After they returned home, he was the first person, after his dad, who tried to save the lives of his youngest brothers by shouting at them to escape.
• A daughter-in-law (NN) eight months pregnant—attempts to save her baby were not successful, increasing the actual number murdered to eight.
• The two beautiful little girls (NN & FN) of one of the surviving sons who were smothered to death…likely as their mother watched
• The sister of the daughter-in-law (SA) mother of a 2 month old who was just visiting the household that night.
We provide a way to safety for:
• The only daughter of the head-of house (SN). Currently living with her husband and two sons in one of the most dangerous provinces of Afghanistan, she is 5 months pregnant with her third child and is completely traumatized and broken down, no longer able to think about herself and her baby. After hearing the news, she didn’t even know who to cry for as nearly her entire family was violently taken from her.
• Two brothers (MN & EN) who were wounded in the attack. They survive but with the physical and emotional wounds of the attack and the fear that the violence may not yet be over for their family.
• The widow and two sons of (AN) who were planning to celebrate a birthday, not mourn their death of their precious husband and father.
Thankfully, there are members of this family living safely in other countries. We will all work together to support those still in Afghanistan with funds to leave as soon as possible…
