Honoring a Marine: Funeral Assistance

It is with a heavy heart that I share the passing of Gunnery Sergeant, Eric Smith, USMC (Retired). Eric was an incredible person and set the example in everything he did; his service to our country, his devotion to family, and the love and care he showed to those around him. He was easy to talk to, easy to love, and made everyone around him feel heard and valued. His 50 years with us was too short, and yet his impact on his community, family, and friends will be felt for a long, long time.

Eric grew up in Bastrop and attended Bastrop High School, enlisted in the United States Marine Corps where he would complete a decorated 20+ year career as a combat engineer, and retired with his family in back in Texas. After retirement he continued to pursue his education and personal interests, completing his undergraduate degree and volunteering his time with animal rescues. His sudden and unexpected passing has left his wife Kathy (my sister), their kids, family and friends all struggling to cope.

As the Smith family works through this tough time and makes arrangements for Eric’s final farewell, they’re also facing the challenge of covering the funeral costs. To ease this burden, I’m asking our community for support to help give Eric the tribute he deserves.
