Honoring Dean Penland's Legacy of Laughter and Love
Donation protected
The world has known less laughter, less light, and less love for people since our brother, Dean Penland, left us last month. He and Melissa committed themselves to changing lives in one of the most poverty-stricken areas in our nation, and they kept that committment even while they both struggled through health problems that would have left just about anybody else watching from the sidelines for the rest of their lives. Of course, Dean and Melissa didn't do it all alone. Dean was always quick to express his gratitude for the support they received for their mission work, much of it from The Citadel alumni. He needs our help one more time.
Because of the health problems and the financial challenges they created, Dean died with no life insurance, leaving Melissa; his son, Caleb; his self-proclaimed adopted son, Andy; and his brothers to pay not only cremation and burial expenses, but also travel from different states back to the funeral. In addition, Melissa has been diagnosed with early onset dementia and isn't able to work or care for herself. The family will be supporting her until appropriate healthcare and income assistance are secured.
The goal of $6,500 will cover the funeral costs and help with the family's expenses getting to and from the service in July. However, Melissa's care will be ongoing, so any money about the goal will be used for her care.
For those able to attend, visitation will be at 12:00 pm at Trinity of Fairview 646 Concord Road in Fletcher, NC. The service will follow at 1:00 pm.
