Ironman 70.3 - Honoring Family, Supporting the Future

Tax deductible
Post Race Update (October 2024) - A Huge Thank You and Race Recap!
I want to extend my deepest thanks to everyone who generously contributed to this fundraiser. Thanks to your incredible support, we were able to raise over $30,000 for several amazing organizations that focus on helping young adults. I couldn’t be more grateful!

The event was an unforgettable experience. I was fortunate enough to ride Aaron’s bike and use his gear, which made the entire journey even more meaningful. From start to finish, I felt my dad and brother right there with me, encouraging me every step of the way.

My goal was to finish the race in 6 to 7 hours, and despite battling some serious cramping during the last 10 miles of the run, I crossed the finish line at 6:46. It was without a doubt the toughest thing I have ever done, but also one of the most rewarding. I’m already excited about taking on more races in the future.

Thank you again for making this all possible! Your donations will directly support young adults in need, and I’m beyond thankful for your generosity.

Update 9/18/24 - We are blown away by the support and generosity - thank you so much for supporting these great non-profits. We are increasing our matching up to $15,000 in hopes of raising a combined $30,000.

TL;DR: On September 22nd, I’m competing in the Cozumel Ironman 70.3 in memory of my brother, Aaron, and raising funds for three causes supporting young adults. I’ll be matching donations up to $10,000. 100% of donations are tax-deductible and go directly to these impactful organizations.

On September 22nd, 2024, I’ll be competing in the Ironman Cozumel 70.3 (1.2-mile swim, 56-mile bike, 13.1-mile run) in memory of my brother, Aaron Burby, who completed 19 full Ironmans and 10 half Ironmans (70.3). By finishing this race, I’ll be adding to his legacy—together, we’ll hit 30 total.

This race isn’t just about finishing, though. I’m using it as an opportunity to raise funds for three causes close to my heart—and I know Aaron would be proud to support them too. I’ll be riding his triathlon bike, wearing his helmet, gloves, and using his water bottle, marked with his motivational words: “TTFU” (Toughen the F Up), “Smile + Laugh,” and “You’ve Got This Burby!” While I won’t match his incredible times, my goal is to honor his spirit and strength. Check out the pictures below.

The three organizations we are supporting are:
  • SetPath – Empowering young adults through life planning and mentorship, helping them navigate life’s challenges. I’ve been on the board since 2022, and I believe in their mission wholeheartedly. Learn more .
  • Bill Burby Wellness Scholarship – Created in memory of my dad after he passed in 1989, this scholarship supports high school seniors living a balanced, healthy lifestyle. It’s a tribute to his legacy as a coach, teacher, and friend on Vashon Island.
  • Aaron Burby Strive & Thrive Scholarship – Established in 2020 after Aaron’s passing, this scholarship goes to a student who embodies Aaron’s values—tenacity, integrity, and community service—just as he did throughout his life.

I’ll be matching all donations dollar for dollar, up to $10,000, and 100% of proceeds will go to these causes—50% to SetPath, and 50% split between the two scholarships. Your contribution is tax-deductible and will help empower young adults to lead lives filled with purpose.

Why am I doing a half Ironman now?
This time last year, I got back into running, starting with a couch to 10k program. Then came a half marathon, where I ran quite a bit faster than the only other half marathon I did 15 years ago. Feeling inspired, I set my sights on this Ironman 70.3, a race in a beautiful location with a flat course. So I started swimming again and got onto a road bike. Though I didn’t quite account for the 85-95°F weather and 70% humidity that I will be enjoying in Cozumel!

At this point in my 50s, is getting into long-distance triathlon ideal? Probably not—but thanks to regular acupuncture, physical therapy, cold plunges, lots of support from family and friends, and sheer determination, I’m feeling strong and ready.

I’m grateful for any donation you can make to support these causes and for helping me keep my brother’s and father’s legacies alive. I’ll share the final results and my matching contribution after the race. Together, we can make a real impact.

Thank you for reading, and please feel free to share this with anyone that knew or was impacted by Aaron or my dad or who just might want to help!

With gratitude and appreciation,
Jason

Note: GoFundMe only allows donations to one charity at a time, so your donation will be directed to SetPath. However, I will personally match all contributions, and the final total will be split as follows: 50% to SetPath, 25% to my brother’s scholarship fund, and 25% to my dad’s scholarship fund—supporting young adults through all three causes.
