"It is with heavy hearts that we share the news of the passing of Detroit radio legend Lee Alan (Allen A. Reicheld) on October 29, 2024. Just shy of 90 years old, Lee left behind an unparalleled legacy in broadcasting and a profound impact on generations of listeners and future radio talents."
"Lee Alan was a towering figure in the world of radio and TV. His career began at WJLB and WJBK before moving to WKMH (later WKNR), where he captured the hearts of Detroit’s youth. His time at ABC’s WXYZ radio was legendary; his iconic 7-Midnight show dominated the airwaves and introduced the biggest names in music to generations of teenagers. Lee revived the famous Walled Lake Casino bringing the biggest names in music to perform.
Lee was one of the first U.S. DJs to interview The Beatles. He collaborated with Motown's Berry Gordy to create the song, "Set Me Free" to raise funds for the YMCA summer camps. Lee was backed by Martha & the Vandellas, Marvin Gaye, & Stevie Wonder.
He co-hosted, with Joel Sebastian, CLUB 1270, a beloved TV dance show on WXYZ TV Channel 7.
He founded the Lee Alan School of Broadcasting, which evolved into the Specs Howard School of Broadcast Arts, nurturing future generations of broadcasters.
In later years, he moved to Florida, where he continued to innovate by producing countless Audible books." At the same time, he wrote a book about his career called “Turn Your Radio On”. Lee also narrates it and remembers so many amazing tales about his career highs and lows. A new audio book about his life and other DJs he knew was being completed prior to his passing.
"Lee Alan was larger than life. His commitment to Detroit and the world of broadcasting, makes it fitting that we honor his legacy with a funeral and burial that reflect his contributions. We are raising funds to support Lee's funeral expenses.
This is not only a tribute to his illustrious career but a gesture to celebrate the man who remained true to Detroit even when bigger opportunities beckoned."
"We ask friends, fans, and all who were touched by Lee’s voice and vision to support us in giving him the farewell he deserves. Your contributions will help cover the costs associated with the funeral services. If you cannot donate, sharing this page would mean so much in spreading the word and honoring Lee’s legacy."
On behalf of his wife, Nancy Davis, "Thank you for being part of Lee Alan’s story and for helping us honor a true broadcasting icon. Your generosity ensures that his legacy will live on and that his final resting place reflects the significant impact he made on so many."
We are hoping his many fans who remember Lee Alan 'On The Horn' will make a contribution to this effort.
