Honoring Mike Hyde and Helping Mike's Family

Donation protected
This world has lost a a wonderful, giving, funny, fiercely competitive, BIG-hearted Friend, a very impactful leader, but most importantly a loving husband and father, Mike Hyde.  Mike’s family is devastated and beyond shocked.  Mike entered the hospital on December 28, 2020, with what he and his family thought was a lingering injury from a fall from a ladder; shockingly he was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer on January 4 and passing in the early morning hours of January 10 at his home surrounded by his family.

As we all are struggling with this news, everyone has been asking what they can do to help the Hyde Family.  The Family faces medical and burial expenses as well as expenses for Mike’s high school children who we have all come to love as our own kids, Easton and Rebel.  Your thoughts and prayers as well as your financial help  for the Hyde Family are very much appreciated.

The impact that Mike has made on this community is vast.  In his over 35+ years of coaching football, Mike has particularly impacted countless lives among the youth he coached and their families.  Mike felt like ALL of these kids were his sons and daughters and ALL of the families of the kids were his family, and he loved all of us as such.  Mike’s gritty voice (and colorful words of coaching as many of his athletes can attest) as he coached the kids on the field was just as unmistakably real and genuine as his BIG heart.  Mike helped his kids and their families through the trials and tribulations of life both on and off the field.

Mike, a long-time resident with his beloved family of Burbank, WA, began his coaching career in Gresham, OR as a youth football coach as a favor to Coach Campbell from the University of Oregon (UofO).  Coach Campbell is the reason Mike came to love this game again as his injury to his knee at the UofO made him despise the game.  However, he started helping coach a youth team and came to love the game from a different perspective.  Mike continued his coaching in the Tri-Cities, starting in Pasco at Pasco Youth Football (PYF) with Paul Hopkins, Melanie Brown, and Mearl Rissman.  Mike ended up taking that program to its peak in the Columbia Basin Football League running PYF with Melanie and Mearl with 21 teams in the league (9-13 year olds), including superbowl champion teams.  Whether one of Mike’s kids was on the team or not, he loved coaching – PERIOD.  Over time, Mike, Melanie, Mearl, Mindy (Mike’s forever patient and loyal wife), and his sons, Bug and Casey, started their own program in Burbank as Burbank Youth Football (BYF).  Although Bug was only in high school, many of you know he acted older than his years of age and could help run the program as a coach to his younger brother’s, Easton’s, team.  Casey was just out of high school attending college and helped coach Easton’s team to victory for several years.

Mike and his family ran BYF until Easton’s 6th grade year when the family began coaching in Kennewick and helped build the youth football conference of Kennewick.  Mike coached for two brief years with Bug in Kennewick as a Union coach and a Southridge coach.  Mike and Bug were then recruited by Scott Kitchens to come to Hanford to help as coaches for the then 8th and 6th grade teams.  During this time, Mike and Bug started another football program but this time with 7-on-7, the Columbia Basin Select.  This team travelled all over the country including Washington, Idaho, Oregon, Nevada, California an even willing bids to national tournaments in Texas and Florida.  Yes, Bug and Mike would even load the kids up in their own rigs and hauled trailers to caravan wherever the next tournament was.  And during this time, as if the man wasn’t doing enough, Mike with Bug’s help began assisting Football University (FBU), which is another national program for tackle football.  Mike helped the region and nation take notice of the very talented football athletes in our community, and he took tremendous pride in his teams.  But Mike was more than just a coach to many of the athletes – he was their counsel, teacher, mentor, their trusted Friend, and most importantly a father figure.  Mike would do ANYTHING for these kids.

By Mike’s side throughout the years was the love of his life, his wife, Mindy, whom we have all come to love and adore.  Mindy always helped with EVERYTHING from meals to hauling gear to bringing snack for the boys (and coaches).  Mindy was probably the only one that could keep Mike in line (sort of), besides one of his sons, of course.  Never far from Mike’s side, and most of the time coaching with him, was his son and his BEST friend, Bug.  Casey, Mike’s oldest son, has started his own family and lives happily in Touchet, WA.  Mike’s youngest son, Easton (Hanford High Senior this year), has had his Dad as his Coach his entire life and most certainly has a very promising future in football.  And perhaps his daughter, Rebel’s (Hanford sophomore this year), BIGGEST cheer fan, well maybe next to Mama Mindy, was Proud Papa Mike.

In addition to being a loving Father and a top-class Coach, Mike enjoyed a long career in construction and worked with Bug at New Tradition Homes as a superintendent.  Hard to believe that Mike had a full-time job (of which he would have to report to in the early morning hours), given how much time and dedication he gave to his passion of football and his football kids.

It is time for us to give back to this Family that has given so much of themselves over the years.  Please share this GoFundMe page so we can collectively get the word out and help the Hyde Family as much as possible.  Please know that all funds raised (minus fees) will go to Mindy and Family.  More events to honor Mike are being planned as well so check this page for updates.  THANK YOU very much for your thoughts, prayers, and help.
