Rhize Klaus-Peter Ermel (they/them), 34, tragically passed away on Wednesday, August 28th, in their home in Burlington, Wisconsin.
Born on August 27th, 1990, Rhize was a beloved sibling, child, and friend who brought passion, resilience, and determination to all aspects of their life. Known for their fierce dedication to justice and advocacy, Rhize spent much of their life fighting for those whose voices were silenced, especially in Palestinian liberation work, Black Lives Matter, and disability awareness.
A true entrepreneur, Rhize had a diverse career reflecting their passions and skills. From gem cutting to cultivating specialty peppers, Rhize explored many different paths. Still, in mycology, they found their true calling and made a groundbreaking discovery—indoor morel mushroom production, a feat that had long eluded others in the field. Their dedication to understanding and cultivating fungi reflected their scientific curiosity and their commitment to sustainability and innovation in horticulture.
In addition to their professional pursuits, Rhize was deeply committed to activism and community care. As a trained street medic, they dedicated their time and energy to supporting those on the front lines of social justice movements. Whether offering medical assistance during protests or advocating online for the rights of marginalized communities, Rhize’s activism was driven by their deep empathy and belief in a more equitable world.
Rhize is survived by their mother (Amy McCarthy), father (Matthias Ermel), and sibling (Lis Ermel). Rhize’s presence will be missed dearly by their family, friends, and community.
A public memorial service will be held at Zao MKE Church in Milwaukee, WI, on Saturday, October 12th. All are welcome.
