"A memorable person is one who leaves a lasting impression on your heart, even after they're gone, like a melody that lingers long after the song has ended."
At 82 years old, Russ Baker was one of those people that once you met him, you'd probably always remember him. He was the type that could get along with anyone and could always produce the right advice, consolation, jokes, or story to share with you. He was a bright light in the lives of people he met and loved.
Russell proudly served in the United States Army, dedicating many years to his country with honor and distinction before returning to civilian life. He then devoted the following 39 years to working with Greyhound Bus Lines.
In 2014, he was diagnosed with breast cancer. He underwent surgery and then started chemo and radiation. During this time, he continued to work at Greyhound in Appleton. Even on those days when chemo kicked his butt, he still showed up to work and do what he loved. Seeing and meeting people was such a joy for him. Russ then went into remission for a few years. In 2021, after a rough fall, it was discovered his cancer had returned. The cancer did not only return to his breasts but his entire body - breast, bones, liver. Mentally, he was struggling hard and felt defeated. Upon receiving news that he would be getting his first great-grandson, he pulled strength to fight. Over the next three years, this man fought with every ounce of himself through numerous rounds of chemo. He had good days and he had bad days. Early in 2024, it was discovered the chemo was no longer working and the cancer was multiplying rapidly. He spoke with his doctors and they decided to try an intensive chemo medication. By then, his body had grown too weak to continue and could not handle the medication. Unfortunately, Russ passed away on November 14, 2024 at his home in Appleton, WI.
The world lost a truly great, strong, patient, kind, smart, funny, and empathetic man today. He fought so damn hard until the end. He brought smiles and laughs to everyone and was so loved.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Rosalie Ann Paris Baker; his father, Leslie C. Baker; his mother, Juanita Elinore Hiatt Baker; and his sister, Mary Newton.
Russ leaves behind a cherished family, including his sons, Steven and Timothy (Stacey); his adored granddaughters, Stephanie (Chris), Leanna (Dalton), and Faith; his cherished great-grandsons, Connor and Aiden; and his adopted granddaughter, Janice (Emilio).
Russ will be remembered for his unwavering dedication to his family, his selfless service to his country, and the kindness and strength he brought to all who knew him. His absence will be deeply felt, but his legacy will live on through the love of those he leaves behind.
A service in his honor will be held on Saturday, November 23, at Hansen-Onion-Martell Funeral Home, 610 Marinette Avenue, Marinette, WI 54143. The visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. with a service at 1 p.m. Burial will occur following the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations to help with the funeral and burial expenses.
Thank you all for your condolences. Russ will be so very missed!
