Written by her daughter Olivia:

My mother was a woman of many attributes. She was a wife, a friend, a mother, and a grandmother. She was a creator of sorts, with her hands in almost every craft imaginable. We counted one time, she had 13 different craft skill sets. Jewelry making, painting, scrap booking, sewing, drawing, writing, stain glass and way more than I know the terminology for. Her favorite, however, was jewelry making. It’s the thing that gave her the most joy, aside from painting. She loved music, singing, traveling, laughing. She really loved laughing. She did it as often as she could get away with. Her laughter…her laughter was so infectious. Despite being a woman of many passions, she also faced a hand full of health issues. For nearly 23 years until her death, mom battled with congestive heart failure, a string of mental challenges, strokes, and overall declining health. Ultimately what led to her passing was a series of fallings in a brief time span, starting back a couple months ago beginning with a fall with her Husband, my dad, Adam Sonnier.

Time Line of Decline

March 6- Mom and Dad fell together. Mom sustained no injury and dad broke his hip landing him in the emergency room. Starting a long road of recovery and trials
March 9 – Dad went into surgery.
March 12 – Dad went into a skilled nursing home for rehab for 6 weeks following his surgery.

During this time my siblings and I took turns sitting and caring for our mother as my dad would when he was able. Driving from Maurice, Opelousas, and Lafayette to Broussard we took care of her, bathing her, taking her to doctor appointments, assisting her to the restroom and providing 3 meals a day. The six weeks without my father in the home proved to be very challenging, emotionally, spiritually, and financially for all of us.
Easter- We were able to see and hug our dad. This was a miracle because visiting was restricted due to COVID. It was a good day.

April 28 –Dad came home, we celebrated. He had more healing to do and his mobility was limited but he was home. We continued taking turns as siblings but now caring for both parents.

Mother’s Day- Our mom fell face forward trying to get out of the recliner resulting in a serious head injury.

Wednesday and Thursday, May 13 & 14, she fell two more times. Each trip to the Emergency Room, we were told nothing was broken and there was no bleeding within the brain.

Saturday May 15 mom collapsed from what we suspect to be a hemorrhagic stroke. In her final moments, by her side were her husband of 42 years, granddaughter, Jada, and grandson Josh (whom just graduated from high school on Friday). Jada, witnessing the last few moments of her grandmother’s life, writes to tell how it happened right before she passed:

Jada’s account

Before my grandma passed away, she had told me and my pawpaw that she was going home. We told her that she was already home. After we told her that she said “oh” and chuckled. She told me that her head was hurting. So, I was getting her some medicine and water. When I was getting her water, I heard my pawpaw saying the blood of Jesus. So, I looked back, and she was walking backwards like she was a bought to fall. She fell and was in a position where I was able to help her sit up, she was still able to sit up. When I was able to help her sit up, she kept on leaning. Me and my pawpaw was telling maw maw to say something, but she wasn’t responsive. She wasn’t breathing like she usually was, and I was holding her up. I had told pawpaw to call 911 and we did. Joshua [my brother] came downstairs after we called him a few times not knowing what was going on, he was upset, and paw paw was worried. I was the one who was at peace and I didn’t really know what to do. I was on the phone with the ambulance when josh came down and he called my uncle vern and my mom. The lady that was on the phone with me was asking me if she was breathing and I said every once and a while she said that we need to find somebody to do compression CPR on her so josh did the CPR and was trying really hard to keep her alive that is when the ambulance came and did the CPR on her. And they were doing the best they could to help her live. To be honest being an 11-year-old girl holding her grandma and watching her die was sad but brave move to make and after seeing the ambulance people doing to keep her alive was very hard. But god gave me the courage to be brave and to be in peace. My family told me that I was very brave having to see all of what happened. I told nanny and my mom that this is just temporary and that we will see her again in haven. It was hard for me and my family, but we are going to be ok.

Many people have asked how they could help the Sonnier family in this time. As they care for their aging father and plan the memorial service for their mother, one of the biggest needs is financial support to cover funeral cost and to be a blessing to this family. This would elevate a lot of stress as they were not prepared for such a tragic lost. Other ways to help include but not limited to:

*Prayer lots of it
*Providing a meal(s)
*Being a sitter with Mr. Adam (those who know him personally) to relieve children to work or tend to other things
*Running errands
*Driving Mr. Adam to Doctor appts.

A note from the family:
As a family we are not used to asking for assistance. We are just spread thin during this time. All help is humbly accepted and gratefully appreciated.

Funeral services will be held Saturday May 22, 2021 at 10:00 am at Crossroads Church.
