THE WHY
This GoFundMe was created to honor the life and legacy of my recently deceased father, Irvin Wayne Brewington, and to raise financial support for his widow, my loving mother, Bernice Chavis Brewington, who is set to receive all the proceeds raised.
THE NARRATIVE
Married for 37 years, my parents’ life is one worthy of a New York Times bestseller. Mom had recently lost her 1st husband to a tragic motorcycle accident and was left to raise 2 teenage daughters alone (my sisters). Dad, on the other hand was a 10th-grade dropout, who battled with alcoholism and eventually found himself homeless at the age of 28.
Here were two people, broken and full of despair, but not too far for the hand of God to reach; and after encountering the love of God and surrendering to His plan for their lives, they eventually fell in love, and were married. And there began the fairytale love story that would go on to impact the lives of countless people.
Dad never picked up the bottle again, and never forgot where God brought him from. Looking back, my childhood is riddled with memories of Mom & Dad housing single moms, addicts, and wayward souls. I remember my parents pulling over on many occasions to minister to exploited women - taking these ladies to dinner and buying groceries for them. Once I came home after school to find a homeless man on our couch eating MY after-school snacks! :)
When I was 13, Mom & Dad opened Haven of Hope, an inner-city ministry that fed, discipled, and cared for the homeless multiple nights a week. In over 37 years of marriage and ministry, they have ministered in jails, to children, they have sponsored more international children than I could count; supported more missionaries and ministries than I could recall; and not only have I watched them give away things like furniture and vehicles… I have watched them give away their lives for the sake of others finding their own.
In 2012 Dad had a massive stroke that left him paralyzed on his right side and void of speech. In the blink of an eye, their lives were interrupted and flipped upside down, as Mom made the decision to be my Dad's sole caretaker - bathing, shaving, feeding, and mobilizing him. Unfortunately, his health continued to decline drastically for the next 8 years, but my mom continued to serve, not only Dad, but her ailing 83 year old Mother, whom she also nurtured and cared for in the same home until Grandma passed away 2 years ago.
THE NEED
In an effort to honor the selfless love, gratuitous service to others, and the many seeds that my Dad has sown on this side of eternity, my wife and I are hoping to raise enough support to help my Mom during this time of transition and grief. Thankfully, the immediate funeral costs have been covered by insurance and a few family members who were able to help meet that need. However, since she’s now lost both a mother and a husband, her income moving forward will be drastically reduced.
This GoFundMe is an opportunity for Kingdom-minded friends and family to rally behind the blessing of Godly legacy; for those who practice generosity; walk in honor; and understand the power and potential of a life truly surrendered and poured out for the sake of the Good News reaching lost people.
