Canadians of the American Civil War

Donation protected
Did you know that over 40,000 of our Canadian ancestors enlisted to fight in the American Civil War from 1861-1865?

These Canadian-born citizen-soldiers came from Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, PEI & Newfoundland. Over 7,000 were killed or died of their wounds.

Examples of 12 Canadian-born individuals who received the U.S. Medal of Honor. There were a total of 29 recipients and you can learn more about them all here.

In over 150 years since the American Civil War, there is yet to be a monument in Canada to recognize these brave lives.

We are erecting the first ever National Canadian War Monument to make aware and preserve their memory for present and future generations of Canadians.

We need your support to make this happen!

Final monument design by GBM and Martel & Sons Inc. features a 12ft high black granite obelisk, on a 2ft gray granite base. Includes 2ft x 7ft black granite side walls. 1st is a Donor Wall and the 2nd wall highlights the 29 medal of honour recipients, four generals and other prominent Canadians involved in the American Civil War. Surrounding the monuments is a paved pedestrian walkway lined with gray Donor granite bricks.
