You may even find yourself sexually liberated forever.

The Hooker Monologues  project is a creative, theatrical platform for experiential people and allies to share our experiences in and with the sex industry and for our voices to be heard on our own terms.

Our stories spring from the entire spectrum of sex work. This is our world; we will share our stories with you,  showing all that sex work is and can be.

Sex workers have a history and a culture fashioned from an outsider perspective and marked by resistance and hope.

One of the voices in the production belongs to Sarah de Vries, one of Vancouver’s missing women, reading to us from journals left behind when she disappeared.

Sarah’s is a story of survival sex work. Other stories come from many sources, including the world of exotic dancing, independent indoor sex work, a glimpse of Vancouver’s Shame the Johns movement, and a sex worker’s story from September 11, 2001.

All monologues will be performed by members of our collective.

Now is the time to undertake such a production, as Canada’s new sex work legislation, the Protection of Communities and Exploited Persons Act (PCEPA), has reduced sex workers’ freedom and human rights. We believe that through our production, community members, sex workers and allies will be transformed.

What We Need & What You Get

The campaign was originally created August 29, 2015, but not officially launched till December 2015 to iron out the logistics of the fund raising efforts.

What you as a contributor will help to do is promote social transformation of sex workers and the public through the arts. While there has always been a strong focus on the population of sex workers who are street based, we wish to point out that it is a much broader community that reaches far and wide through all commuities.

Communities of various forms of sex work unified by the high levels of “whore stigma” that persist. Sex workers need a creative outlet through which to share their truths that include both serious and humorous lessons to improve their interactional experiences the general population. It is timely to undertake such a production now as newly enacted legislation will reduce their opportunities to engage with social supports.

The Hooker Monologues project provides a mechanism for sex workers’ unmediated stories and creates opportunities for them to speak to the injustices that threaten their safety and limit their access to the rights and services available to other Vancouver residents.  We believe that through this production, community members, sex workers and allies will be transformed.

Why WE, are asking for is YOUR help in raising $12 000 for our production, a production that will need to secure a location, rehearsal space, lighting  and sound technicians. Wardrobe, makeup and hair, and ever popular advertising and media distribution. We need this because, well sex work is not deemed as the reputable source of work a person should doing. At times it seems difficult to get funding, but we’ve received some support from City of Vancouver and the art’s fund, and we are still coming to you for additional support especially when a large portion of society still sees us as deviants or other. Regardless of what you think, we hope that it can be support of the unconditional kind.

HKR Monologues Funders

The HKR monologues group has received generous financial support from the City of Vancouver 2015 Community Arts Grants,  the Community Arts Council of Vancouver and Face the World Foundation . We’ve just concluded our first crowd-sourcing campaign in November 2015, raising $1900 from 30 awesome donors!! We are very appreciative for the investment from these organizations and individuals. In total we have raised almost $18,000.

We have scaled back our production budget to $25,000. The theatre professionals working with us have donated their time and reduced their rates all because they believe in this project. We need your help to raise $12,000 more, to give Vancouver a theatre production that reflects the city’s arts and social justice culture and also respects the lives and experiences of the sex workers who live here.
