Hope, Faith, and Liberty Rescue Fund

Dear Supporters:

Meet Hope, Faith and Liberty: three Jersey cows that were rescued from a horrible farm animal abuse case in Andover, VT on September 21st. A little about their backstory...for months, complaints had been lodged to the town and state over the horrible conditions seen at Lovejoy Brook Farm, which included sick, emaciated animals being kept in small, disease-ridden pens without foot and water, or proper medical care. Finally after enough complaints, authorities stepped in to seize the animals, finding only five cows remaining, which were up to their knees in their own filth. Unfortunately, the farmer had already sold them to auction that night, saying they were being shipped out in the morning. The community task force that had assembled to help these animals was heartbroken.

 

But early on the morning of September 21st, one hour before they were being sent to slaughter for dog food, we were able to convince the farmer to surrender three of his five cows. He told us we could have them if we beat the slaughter truck...and we did! At first, the farmer would only give us one mother cow, whose eye was so diseased it was swollen shut, puss oozing down her face, and one of her two daughters (a cow that was only born this year). But as the slaughter truck was loading the three remaining cows, one refused to surrender and be boarded, and after desperate pleas to let her go, we were permitted to take the third cow.

 

Now, with joy, we would like you to meet our three Jersey ladies:

 

Hope: the mama cow with a severely infected eye. Emergency vet services will be assessing the situation to see if her eye can be saved. Despite her maltreatment, Hope is a good-tempered cow who loves her daughter and who hopefully has many long, healthy days ahead. See a photo of poor Hope's condition below (trigger warning):

 

 

Faith: Hope's daughter born this year. Faith is a shy, small girl who loves her mama dearly. She is always by her mother's side.

 

Liberty: the two-year-old cow who, at the last minute, escaped the slaughter house truck. Liberty has the darker markings on her face . She is in distress after being separated from her mother this morning and is a little weary of people after all she's been through.

 

After an eight-hour volunteer rescue mission, we are overjoyed to report that Hope, Faith, and Liberty are now safe in a green pasture, with proper food, water, and shelter. But we need your help to continue to keep them safe, fed, and properly cared for by emergency veterinarian services! All three cows will need to be tested for severe illness, and the fate of Hope's eye will rely on a biopsy.
