HOPE FOR HUEY

No one will argue how chickens have contributed to the survival of man kind. On that note, I would like to share with you our Baby Hueys story.
Nikki is a retired disabled veteran and I am local city Police Officer living in the Houston metropolitan area. Nikki has always loved and cared for Gods animals from horses, cats, dogs and yes chickens. Living on a fixed income she struggled to make sure her kiddos had their needs met. Myself, working as a local Police Officer I picked up strays and found homes for them and fed the strays I couldn’t catch. Nikki and I have about 15 mixed chickens, 5 horses and 5 dogs and we love them equally.
Well, in the early part of 2016, Nikki had lost a few chickens to stray dogs. Then again in July of 2016 stray dogs maimed two more chickens. It was a very emotional time for Nikki and the loss just lingered. After much thought, she decided to attempt to hatch a few eggs. Towards the end of November Nikki had 8 new baby chickens.
From the batch came Baby Huey, all white with pretty black spots who was bigger than rest. The following morning Nikki noticed one of Baby Hueys legs was splayed. That's when the leg grows in a abnormal condition. So like a good mama Nikki did her best at trying to fix the splayed leg but was unsuccessful. Determine to find a cure, Nikki researched the internet trying everything out there. She hand made leg braces, straps, sponge chairs, slings and despite her efforts Baby Huey got worse. Day and night, Nikki did her best to hand feed and carry Baby Huey all around the house making sure Baby Huey was happy.
We made several calls to different animal hospitals and only Gulf Coast Veterinary Specialists, was able to give some hope for Baby Huey. The GCVS hospital is amazingly advance in animal care and we were very pleased with the doctors. Well they examained Baby Huey and they determined that Baby Huey would need surgery. The overall surgery was estimated to cost approximately $2,800 dollars and that didn't include rehabilitation.
Wow! We were floored and Nikki couldn't stop crying, how would we pay for this surgery? Baby Huey is sweet, chirpy and extremely lovable with a great personality. Baby Huey deserves a good quality of life. Reality set in and our emotions were all over the place, we needed help. In hope of finding help for Baby Huey we located a animal rescue sanctuary called Rowdygirl. The sancuarys background shared similar beliefs and our chickens are not for eating. So we crossed our fingers and prayed they would consider helping Baby Huey. Over the next few days we reached out to Rowdygirl a several emails later they agreed to help.
Through our combined efforts we pray that others will join us in helping Baby Huey. Chickens have contributed to the survival of man kind and giving back is a natural course of life. Baby Huey purrs like a cat when he is happy and when exited he chirps like a parakeet. With your donations and gifts Baby Huey will hopefully enjoy life and you will be blessed for giving back to Gods animals.
It is note worthy to mention, this experience has sparked a sincere interest and concern about meat alternatives. Both Nikki and I are not big on beef and polutry but the idea of eating one of our pets is unthinkable. After watching a video called Cowspiracy referenced on Rowdygirls website, we definitely questioned our own consumption of meat products. The sustainability secret is the blood diamonds of americas supply and demand. We hope that others will watch this video and conclude that sustainability also means accountablity.
Thank you all for your continued support and prayers.
