Hope for Sofia During Covid-19
Sofia is a teenager that at this moment is wondering what is going to happen with her life in the near future, and I am not talking about next year, or next month, but specifically on June 23rd, the day she (hopefully with all of our help) will be having the urgent surgery she desperately needs.

On May 30th, 2020, Sofia suffered an injury while working, she was hit in the deep cervical area damaging nerves and vertebrae. The RMI results showed several herniated disks, nerve damage, cervicobrachialgia, and issues with C3, C5, C6 and T5. The pain has increased to the point where she has to be heavily medicated all the time.
Sofia needs immediate surgical intervention, and the only timely option available is a private hospital.
The public health system (Seguro Social), is not giving her any options or not even a timeline. Under normal circumstances the Seguro Social is already a bad place, now with the Pandemic and a death rate above 29% for Covid-19, is a terrifying place to be.
Sofia's friends and family are using their savings, and trying to get a funds by selling some of their personal belongings, but we already know we are going to be short, the pandemic has hurt everybody financially, so we are hoping that GoFundMe and You can help us get there.
Instead of worrying about her college classes or dreaming about being the first in her family to obtain a college degree, Sofia is worrying about how her parents and family will be able to afford a $15,000-$20,000 surgery/recovery. She is very aware of the large debt this is going to cause, because she is an essential worker at a local restaurant, and was already struggling to pay her way to college. To put things in perspective, the average wage in a factory is about $8/day.
Living in Tijuana, "the most dangerous city in the world", is not easy, but is manageable, add a pandemic to the equation, and you are forced to redefine what "dangerous" means.
If Sofia doesn't get this surgery soon, she could have irreversible damage. Then she will have to wait for Covid-19 to "pass", and hope that a failed health system offers her a decent choice.
