Hope Lives Here: Manye Schmidt's TBI Recovery

Donation protected
Hello, we are Emily and Pete, and we're raising funds to support Manye Schmidt and his family as he recovers from a severe traumatic brain injury resulting from a car accident a few days ago. Manye's injuries are significant, they were life threatening, and have changed his life. While it is not possible to know how he will recover, the family knows his recovery, and their support of it, will take years. The expenses associated with the recovery of a traumatic brain injury are astonishing and permanent. No family can do this on their own.

Manye is a wonderful young man who is a delight to all who know him. He just graduated high school last spring and has his whole life ahead of him.

Manye’s mother Nicole Schmidt shared this update yesterday:

3/25/24 4:30 pm Hurry up and wait. Tests and more tests. The thing we are learning about traumatic brain injuries is that no two are exactly the same and the ability to recover varies greatly from person to person.

We know this could permanently alter his personality. His vision. His ability to speak etc.

If you know Manyazewal… he has the ABSOLUTE BEST personality. He’s funny. He’s a great dancer. He’s kind and compassionate. We want every single ounce of him back. All of it. Manye sees people. He feels deeply. The world needs Manye’s joy and humor. This is what we are fighting for. Don’t stop praying.

Manye hasn’t had any nutrition since his accident Friday night. They put a tube in to get him nourished.

He is having additional CT scans on his head and his spleen.

Most of Manye’s head trauma was on the left side. The left side controls auditory processing and speech. This morning on exam he responded to a command to move his left foot. He seems to have less control on his right side as of now.

This essentially means that the auditory processing part is intact. The speech part is a big question. They said 48-72 hours is the danger zone as far as dramatic turns that could happen and the situation could worsen. We are still in that period of time. Then the next important window is 6weeks. They will not call anything brain related permanent for 1.5 years.

Pray for all of it. The world needs all of Manye. We need all of his big and beautiful personality. Please know we appreciate every prayer and every text you send… we just don’t always have the ability to respond well.

*****
Many friends of the Schmidt family want to come alongside them as they support Manye. It is we, the friends, initiating this effort. Please join us as we support the family’s immediate needs and Manye’s significant medical expenses.

The Schmidts are a family of givers. Nicole and Tom are the parents to four wonderful children - Manye, Aiden, Mia, and Abe. Now their son is in need, and they are in need. Please help with any amount you can, so that they can support him in the immediate future, and so that they are prepared for the long road ahead.

Manyazewal’s name means 'Hope will hold him.' Now, we are asking you to 'Be The Hope,' and to hold Manye and his family closely as they begin his difficult process of recovery.

We trust and pray for complete healing and restoration, and we will be with him and his family through every step.

Chip in now to show love to Manye and his family.

With hope,
Emily Huestis and Pete McRoberts
