My students, Andrew and Angelica, are amazing, talented, intelligent and driven 10th and 9th graders at the Biotechnology Research and Zoological Sciences High School at the Fairchild Wheeler Magnet Campus in Bridgeport, CT. They have worked hard to get the opportunity to attend the HOSA International Leadership Conference which will be in Orlando, Florida from June 19-June 22nd.
We need your help to get them there!
What is the HOSA International Leadership Conference?
Health Occupation Students of America (HOSA) is a national organization that provides a students who are interested in the medical field opportunities to advance their future careers. Upon joining our school's chapter, Andrew and Angelica chose to take on the challenge of competing in the annual HOSA competition to test their knowledge in the fields of Pharmacology and Epidemiology. In order to prepare for the knowledge tests, Andrew and Angelica were given only study guidelines and access to text books. They studied and prepared for the knowledge tests on their own in addition to their schoolwork.
Andrew and Angelica both scored in the top 3 for the state of Connecticut on their knowledge tests. This qualified them to travel to Florida to compete at the national level in the HOSA International Leadership Conference (ILC) . The HOSA ILC is a conference where over 10,000 students from across the globe attend workshops, listen to keynote speakers, interact with unique medical equipment and network with similarly minded and driven students. It is a once in a lifetime opportunity and is a major achievement for these two students.
Who are Andrew and Angelica?
Andrew is a 10th grader who has a strong interest in pharmacology, neurology, and genetics, and is considering pursuing a M.D. Ph. D. in medicine. He decided to compete in the Pharmacology Knowledge Test and placed 1st for the state of Connecticut HOSA chapter. He hopes that by attending the HOSA ILC he will gain a more expanded view of the medical field and scientific knowledge in the fields he is interested in.
Angelica hopes to become an obstetrician, cardio-thoracic surgeon, or pursue an M.D. Ph. D.. She believes that these fields can give her the opportunity to help the future by bringing new babies into the world or help someone in their biggest time of need. She decided to compete in the Epidemiology Knowledge Test for the HOSA competition and placed 3rd for the state of Connecticut HOSA chapter. By attending the HOSA ILC, Angelica hopes to learn more about epidemiology and learn how she can apply her knowledge to benefit others.
Where will the money go?
We are hoping to raise $4000 in order to fully fund this trip. On this trip Andrew and Angelica will be accompanied by a parent chaperone and their HOSA advisers. Round-trip airline tickets from New York to Orlando will cost approximately $250 per person totaling $1500. Hotel accommodations at the designated conference hotels will cost $570 per room, totaling $1700. The conference fees are $130 per person, totaling $780.
In order to full fund this trip we will need $4000 by the beginning of May to finalize the trip details.
Andrew and Angelica have worked hard for this once in a lifetime opportunity to attend a conference in which they can meet other like-minded students, engage in workshops, and imagine their futures. Please help them get there!!
