House fire leaves ex QRL player & family homeless

Donation protected

Hi, my name is Shyree and I’m neighbour to the beautiful Grieve family who lost everything in a house fire & Youi, the insurer has denied their claim leaving them with nothing.
Jon & Amelia Grieve are long time Cannon Hill locals.
Jon is owner operator of their family business, Backbone Electrical, servicing inner Brisbane & the local area. He is also an ex Sunshine Coast Falcons & Wynnum Manly Seagulls player with over 100 games to his name. Along with his beautiful wife Amelia, they have 2 young daughters, Harlie & Maple, a mini dachshund called Elkie, a Labradoodle called Lollie and a cat called Hunter.
They are now homeless.
They had been slowly renovating their beloved house but on Sunday 28th May, while the girls were asleep in bed, Jon & Amelia sat down in the backyard to have a quiet cuppa under the stars.
Unbeknownst to them, a charging iPhone on a bedside table had overheated and caused the bed to catch fire, spreading within minutes throughout the front of the house.
There had been back burning nearby that day leaving thick smoke in the air, so sitting in the backyard they had no idea the house was on fire, until a heroic woman drove past and saw the flames, she immediately planted her hand on the car horn, her granddaughter ran to the burning house and bashed on the door trying to alert someone to the fire..
Upon hearing the horn and banging, Jon got up to see what all the noise was about and saw the flames.
Without hesitation he ran into the burning house to rescue his little girls, while Amelia grabbed all of the family pets.
They then had to stand by and watch as the fire took over, burning everything they had built for themselves within minutes.
They were admitted to hospital that night and treated for smoke inhalation but returned the next day to find a smouldering mess with barely anything salvageable.

The local community has rallied around the family in the days following this tragedy, however, as you can imagine, they are still in a state of shock, now finding themselves homeless.

Today they found out their insurance has denied the claim, just one more blow to this already devastated family.

I’m hoping to raise money to assist in getting Jon & Amelia back on their feet..
Whether it be for temporary accommodation or for the rebuild, they will need every cent they can get, especially now that Youi are refusing to pay.

I can’t even imagine as a parent how stressful it must be having to start over again from scratch, so I’m hoping you can help me, help them by donating, no matter how big or small, it all adds up and would be so very much appreciated..
If you’re unable to donate, you can still help by sharing this post and tagging your friends and family - the more people that see it the bigger it will grow..

In the days following the fire, The Courier Mail ran an article, it was on 9News and the Today Show’s Sylvia Jeffries & RIchard Wilkins even crossed live to Jon & Amelia for an interview however, the GoFund me wasn’t promoted and it’s started to stall a little so please keep sharing this post as now we know the Insurers aren’t paying, we need it to gain momentum once again to help this family rebuild their home..

To those who’ve already donated, words can’t express how grateful we are..

Thank you so very much...
