Houses for Homes Guatemala 2018
Houses for Homes builds safe and secure environments that provide a new Start that helps boys and girls, and their parents thrive.
In 2018, two families traveled from New York City to Guatemala to support the organization by volunteering to help build two homes in the village of Aldea El Chipoton.
The Fawkes helped build a single-room home for a family with 9 children on a hillside parcel of land. The Gardner’s built a similar home in the valley for a family of 7. The fathers work locally - one as a brick maker and the other as a hand on the farm. The former makes approximately $14 every 1,000 bricks he makes by hand over a period of 4 days.
Although there was a 'free' school locally, the parents of the hillside family felt that they could not afford the materials and clothing to send their children to school. This is something they were embarrassed by. Most of the children are now too old to join the school system but we hoped that the three children that were 6 years old and younger could still experience the benefits of education.
A special part of the trip was a visit to the families the Fawkes and Gardners assisted in 2017. Even though one father was absent and the other had irregular work, our visits showed the new homes and contributions like an economical oven and sinks helped the families thrive. The children's report cards were impressive!
The contribution by the people who supported our fundraising this year will help many girls and boys and their parents lead fruitful lives that will one day lead to a break in the cycle of poverty that they would have been destined too.
We have asked the charity to dedicate a significant portion of the money to the hiring of a social worker who will check-in on families and help them understand how to send their children to the free school and receive the free healthcare the amazing Houses for Homes organizations supports.
If you would like to support the families of Guatemala get a head start, we will keep this fund open and every 30 days, GoFundMe will send the funds directly to the charity.
