Housing for indigenous flood affectee in Pakistan
Donation protected
In the summer of 2022, Pakistan faced one of the deadliest floods in the world. Recorded as one of the world's costliest natural disasters of all time, the people of Pakistan bore $17 billion in property damage and another $17 billion in economic losses. With over 1/3rd of the country under water, millions of lives have been impacted and thousands have been displaced from their homes. Among those is the indigenous population of the Thar desert in the province of Sindh. The indigenous people of Thar have always lived in suboptimal conditions on remote patches of owned land. They typically used to live in a one-room house for the entire family and survived on whatever they grew on their land. They were dependent on donations and government support for any healthcare needs, etc. Since the floods, the situation has become direr. Their houses have washed away and due to the floods, their land is uncultivatable for the next few years. Prudents, a non-profit near to my heart (more on that later), have been building housing for indigenous families to help support them in getting back on their feet. As a part of this initiative, Prudents is building one-room huts using local materials. So far 43 huts have been built, but the waitlist is long, with hundreds still looking for external support. The cost of build for one hut is Pak Rupees 60,000, which is CAD$ 350 approx. CAD$ 350 to build a house for a family and help give them the support they need with their rehabilitation journey.
On a personal note, my father passed away earlier this month. For more than two decades, my father worked very closely with Prudents in numerous capacities, including as a doctor running free weekly medical clinics in remote and/or underprivileged areas. In memory of my father and in the spirit of continuing his work with Prudents, I am hoping to raise donations to build at least 15 huts for the indigenous people of the Thar desert who have been displaced by the floods and need our immediate support.
Every little helps, so please help contribute. For context, the cost of a Beyonce ticket or a few Uber rides is all that is needed to help an entire family move into a house.
