We’re passionate about building latrines at our partner schools in Burkina Faso. Why? Because 3.6 million people around the world don’t have hygienic toilet facilities. This impacts the health and period maintenance for many girls, including ones in in Burkina Faso.
Instead of learning during their period, a girl may stay home from school due to poor bathroom facilities. Unsafe and unhygienic toilets are bad enough, but to a young girl experiencing her period, it is another obstacle for school. Outdoor pit latrines contribute to the social stigma that a girl is is "unclean" during her period, leading to less participation in class and tardies due to lack of access to clean water.
Here are some other downsides to the current bathroom facilities in Burkina Faso schools:
- Everyone knows when you go to the toilets
- There is lack of clean water to rinse
- Zero pads/tampons dispensers.
- Minimal privacy
To end period poverty we are providing access to menstrual education and period care products. Plus, we are partnering with Burkina Faso schools to advocate for better restroom facilities. A private, gender-safe latrine at a partner school costs approx. $1,500 USD. As we begin the countdown toward Menstrual Hygiene Day 2024 (May 28th), we are putting a call to action: Let's support our partner schools by raising funds to build a gender-safe latrine by this momentous day.
More information about GIRL NOW, WOMAN LATER, INC: Girl Now, Woman Later, Inc., founded in 2020, is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to helping girls in Burkina Faso, (a country in West Africa) learn to manage their menstrual cycles, stay in school and flourish into well-educated women. The majority of girls in Burkina Faso lack menstrual healthcare. This negatively impacts their schooling, and results in them leaving their studies before graduation.
