Sherry's Medical Expenses

Hi everyone, I am setting up this go fund me for my mom, Sherry Holzapfel, to help cover her medical costs.

On March 22nd, my mom thought she was having a routine knee replacement surgery with a 4 – 6 week anticipated recovery and would be able to return back to work. In order to make ends meet she has to work because she doesn’t have any retirement or pension, just social security to live on. Her recovery has not turned out as expected, it has been nothing but complicated and troublesome. Since the first week post-surgery, she has been battling an infection at the incision site. Each week since, it has gotten worse, and the doctor continued to prescribe more oral antibiotics and sent her home. The antibiotics were different kinds and different strengths, but nothing has helped the infection. After several weeks of the doctor giving her the run around without a straightforward solution to clear up the infection, it was time to remove the mesh stitching. The incision had never healed or mended back together. This has left her leg without any skin covering her knee and her bone exposed. At this point, it is so bad that the knee replacement surgeon referred her to an infection specialist in South Bend who then in turn referred her to another specialist in Indianapolis but the Indianapolis specialist didn’t accept Medicare, so they had to refer her to Chicago.

After meeting with a specialist in Chicago, the diagnosis was not good. The first plan of action involves surgically removing all of the infection while providing her with intravenous antibiotics. After the infection has been removed and she fully heals from this procedure which could take several weeks, the next step will be doing another knee replacement surgery. From all of this, it will be a long road of procedures and recovery time with many doctors’ visits, trips to Chicago, physical therapy, and rehabilitation.
