Help Shane Lopes regain his vision

We are Jeff and Kristin Lopes and this handsome young man pictured above is our son Shane. When Shane was in kindergarten he received his first pair of glasses. He looked so adorable. People would always stop us to say he looked like the little boy in the movie Jerry McGuire. As cute as he looked, the glasses were a necessity but we had no idea how much of a necessity they would become.
Every year those cute glasses became stronger and thicker causing Shane to eventually hate wearing them. At an appointment in 2008, his opthalmologist suggested we see a Nuero-ophthalmologist at UCSF. We were scared but needed answers to why Shane's vision continued decreasing. We received that answer and its Optical Nerve Atrophy/Neuropathy. Our optical nerves allow blood to flow from the brain to the eye. Shane's optical nerves are hardening and damaged not allowing the proper amount of blood to flow to the eye causing severe change in visual function. Shane is now legally blind.
Shane saw more doctors who specialize in this area and they all told us the same thing, "no treatment, no cure."
We were devestated, but our fears and concerns couldn't measure what was going through Shane's mind.
The fear of him loosing his vision completely was a posibility and that terrified all of us, until now.
There is a stem cell treatment called the Stem Cell Ophthalmology Treatment Study or SCOTS taking place in Florida. My brother was recently diagnosed with something very similiar to Shane. He was accepted into a stem cell clinic and as soon as we were told about this, I called the doctor, forwarded all medical records and Shane was accepted and is scheduled to start treatment January 5, 2016.
We are asking for donotions because the clinic is patient funded. He will have costly pre and post op visits as well as the travel costs back and forth to Florida. We are hopeful that this is the answer to our prayers for Shane. We know and understand not everyone can donate so all we ask is that you share this page and pray for Shane. Thank you very much.
