Ayita Wheelchair Dance
Donation protected
Hi everyone! It’s that time of year again!
As most of you know Mayli and I started a wheelchair dance class 9 years ago. We started this class to give girls like her a chance to dance, to be empowered, and to build a sisterhood! Our mission has always been to have this class at no cost to the participants. We know first hand that living with a disability is expensive and we didn’t want anyone to miss out on this opportunity due to finances. We have had amazing community support through the years and we are so thankful. We would not be able to do this without all of your generosity.
Ayita is a Cherokee name meaning “First to Dance”. We chose this name because Mayli is Cherokee and whether music was playing or not she was always dancing. She was born to dance.
We’re inspired by Mayli’s famous words, “I can do anything I want to… I just do it a little different.” We put her in dance classes, but we always had a vision of an all wheelchair dance team for her to be part of. (Shout out to Chelsie Hill and Auti Angel from the show “Push Girls” for the inspo) We searched our area for a class and couldn’t find one so we decide to give it a shot and start our own. I rented a space at the YMCA and let people know through different social media outlets that we would be having a class. We had 4 girls attend our first class and it was a hit. The YMCA saw what we were doing and graciously donated their space to us. Our class has now grown to 16 girls from ages 4-15. It’s so beautiful to see these girls grow and come together. The older girls mentor the younger girls giving them the responsibility of being positive role models. It’s amazing to have a safe space for them to come once a week and not be the “girl in a wheelchair” they just get to be little girls.
By donating you’ll be helping our program grow, purchase dance costumes/uniforms and cover recital fees.
We appreciate your interest in our program please take a second to share this page
