Emily Chavez

My name is Erica, and I'm organizing this fundraiser for Emily Chavez (my cousin and beloved friend) and her husband Devon-Wolfe. Emily was diagnosed with a brain tumor in 2020, and underwent surgery to remove it. Unfortunately, during her routine follow-up scans in January 2023, we learned that her tumor has come back. During the next few months, Emily will be traveling back and forth to Salt Lake City (where her neuro team is located), including 6 weeks of chemo and radiation to the brain at the hospital there, followed by up to a year of oral chemo at home. Prior to starting treatment, Emily and Devon-Wolfe have decided to go ahead with an IVF egg retrieval in hopes to someday fulfill their dream of being parents. As I'm sure you can imagine, there are going to be monumental expenses ahead of them as Emily prepares to start treatment. They currently do not have a reliable vehicle to take back and forth to Salt Lake, so they will need to purchase one within the next month. IVF treatment is also very expensive, and even with grant funding, the egg retrieval will cost $7,000 out-of-pocket. Then there will be a $14,000 out-of-pocket deductible this year for her medical treatment, in addition to travel expenses, meals/transportation for the 6 weeks that Emily and her caregivers will be staying in Salt Lake, and any unexpected necessary things that will inevitably pop up along the way. Emily and Devon-Wolfe will both have to take extended time off of work during this time, which also adds to the financial strain they will be facing.

If you know Emily personally, you already know that she is one of the kindest, sweetest, most self-less persons you will ever meet. She loves her people with all her heart. As she and Devon-Wolfe prepare to face this beast head-on, I would love it if they didn't have to worry about finances on top of everything else. Dealing with a brain tumor is enough to worry about and they certainly don't need more stress on top of that!
