HSTA Maui Fire Relief
Donation protected
To our National Education Association members, educators, employees, and friends who want to help our colleagues in Hawaiʻi in this time of crisis:
The Hawaiʻi State Teachers Association (HSTA) is working around the clock to support its members, students, and the entire Maui community as they work to rebuild from the destruction caused by devastating wildfires.
More than 200 educators on the island of Maui are affected and more than 57 lost their homes. An elementary school in Lāhainā, King Kamehameha III Elementary, was destroyed. Damage reports continue to come in and members face a long, arduous road to recovery.
Mindi Cherry, a first-grade teacher at King Kamehameha III Elementary, evacuated with her family to safety, where “we could see explosions happening. It was just explosion after explosion.” After the flames subsided, she returned to find blackened ash where her family home and classroom once stood: “All of that is lost and we just have to start over again.”
Cecilia Evans, CFO of NEA Member Benefits, has organized this fundraiser on behalf of the NEA Member Benefits Relief Fund to help HSTA in their efforts. All donations we receive will be sent to HSTA to distribute directly to members through its relief programs. NEA Member Benefits will pay any fees imposed by GoFundMe, which means 100% of the money you donate will go directly to supporting NEA members and their families.
