Blood From A Turnip

Being a bill collector for over ten years was challenging. I saw the good nature of people sometimes, but more often experienced the bad and ugly side of debt. The upside was hitting my monthly goal, which equates to getting a bonus on top of my hourly salary every month. The negative side was witnessing my co-workers resorting to certain "behaviors" in order to ensure they reached their monthly goal. The reason? If your monthly goals were not reached there were effects that included but not limited to decrease in pay, being placed in another department with "Bad Paper", losing PTO time, or even losing your job,

Our cut throat and often heartless behaviors, within this industry made many people characterize bill collectors as pieces of shit. Honestly, I thought the same thing until I became one! From the first day of training, we are taught to collect these debts as if people owed US the money while detaching from our feelings. If we allowed our feelings or moral compass to get in the way of completing the job and reaching our monthly goals, it is obvious this is not the right job for you!

For many of us, we resorted to feeling heartless just so we could reach our goals and feed our family, take advantage of our PTO and pay our own bills. If we do this by any means necessary, we must be careful we don't get caught or we will have to answer to the FDCPA. If you not, then our job well done will be monetarily beneficial and rewarding.

Hi, my name is Danielle Erwin. I have worked in the bill collection industry for over ten years. I have seen all aspects of this experience, and it has taken a toll. Some of this includes how the industry devalues their employees and how the outside world views us as scum of the earth. I am creating this documentary to provide the humanization of bill collectors, their struggles and they’re behind the scenes stories and lived truths.

I would be honored if you could help me reach my goal for this documentary in order to provide awareness and garner some insights from a bill collector's point of view.  I am also someone who has struggled with debt and therefore understand both sides of the story. Funding is needed for equipment, food, travel, post production and compensation for the crew.  Any donations offered will be greatly appreciated!

Thank you
