The House of Assistance - Brazil

Donation protected
Doris Hipolito has helped to save 3,000 babies from abortion in Brazil. The House of the Assistance is a rented house. She needs to have a bigger new house built and also a van in order to help her pro-life work. Please help her with her mission to help pregnant ladies and save children from abortion.

Maria das Dores  Hipolito Pires, known as  Doris Hipolito, is married and has 2 children. She is a pedagogist and  Professional  Counselor with a solid position against abortion under any circumstance,  and she has worked for the defense of  life for 23 years.

In the year of 1991, when she was a teacher of History and Geography  at Castro Alves School, she was summoned by the Headmaster of the school  to do something for the students that were having abortions and suffering from its consequences.  As  a devout Catholic, Doris sought  the Pro-Life Group in Rio de Janeiro  to help her with this task. They gave her a video with the silent scream and other Pro-Life literature, and oriented her to give some talks, as she was a teacher.  This was the beginning of her way to stop abortion.

Doris started giving talks in her school, then in other schools, and that is when she started thinking about  founding a Pro-Life group in her diocese. She always says she was not successful in the talks she organized in her own parish, as people were not interested in the subject   - Abortion.

One day, after praying Our Lady`s rosary, she felt a strong calling in her heart to pray the rosary for the defense of life, in the square, on the 13th of every month of the year.

After consulting the parish priest she started praying the rosary against abortion in March 1991, in the square. As there was little information on this subject, Doris and a small group of Mary`s Legion, started praying the rosary inside the trains, and  also giving out  pamphlets in  defense of  life against abortion. In October 1991, the                 Bishop Werner Siebembrok welcomed the group as the Social Pastoral in Defense of Life, whose objective is to dissuade women who seek  abortion. In the year of 2007, there appeared the first case of a pregnant woman who was physically and mentally disabled and who lived under an overpass. It was because of this situation  that Doris asked the Bishop for a house to give assistance to these pregnant women.

As no help was given to her she decided to rent a very small house to take this pregnant woman out of the street. Then another pregnant woman came, and others and others so that nowadays the House of Assistance is a bigger one but it is a rented house. Nowadays  the objective of this House is to assist pregnant women who were victims of abuse, violence and social risk and who suffer pressure to abort.

Doris works at the doors of abortion clinics, advising the pregnant women to give up the abortion, and, through telephone calls and denunciations she has the information where this pregnant woman intends to have the abortion done and she goes to her, offering her support to continue with the pregnancy.

This work is done in a place called `baixada fluminense`, in Rio de Janeiro, it is a very poor and socially abandoned area of Rio.

To help the pregnant women who cannot come to the House of Assistance to receive good care, Doris decided to open, in some churches, a centre to attend and accompany pregnant women who need attention to their health and also the baby`s. Considering that 90% of these pregnant women used some kind of abortive medicine, they need attention to their clinic exams.

The pregnant women assisted by the House of Assistance and the Pro-Life centres  participate in professional-oriented courses in sewing ( overlock and neckband), computers and handcraft. During the pregnancy the pregnant women receive clinic exams, medicine and a layette. After the baby is born the single mother is given a place to work where she will be able to live her life with dignity.

According to what was registered,  in this 23-year period of work for the defense of life in the womb, 3.000 babies have already been saved, for the glory of God.

This intense work she does has been  the cause of much persecution by the organizations that work for the culture of death. The feminists who are part of some governmental sectors, aim at defeating this Pro-Life work done at `baixada fluminense`. Doris tells us about a woman, who is a Prosecutor, who came to inspect the House of Assistance and when she saw the photos of the children who were  saved  from abortion she exclaimed, `This House should never have existed!`

Sometimes Doris receives threatening  phone calls, she has received death threats from the feminists who act in her area. However, Doris exults with the testimonies of mothers who overcame the temptation to abort and now can rely on their sons and daughters as successful professionals.

Doris Hipolito has maintained this Pro-Life work for 23 years, counting on God`s Providence and on generous people who donate helping to pay the rent, water bills energy bills, telephone bills, medicine and clinic exams for the pregnant women. She cannot afford to employ anyone so she relies on 5 people who work as volunteers. She does not receive any donation from the government, as her work does not have a legal character.

Doris opted for being a Pastoral of the Catholic Church even though she has no financial help from the parish or from the diocese, she looks for help in the local commerce, who donate fruit, vegetables, bread and other items for their daily use.  Doris herself picks up the donations in her 1995 Fiat which calls for serious mechanic help.

Finally, Doris counts on friends who share the cause for the defense of life in the womb, to help her with the rest of her expenses.

Doris Hipolito`s greatest difficulty is to build a house where she can do her work. She has been praying for this intention. She received a plot of land as a present from friends, and it`s on this plot of land that she wishes to have a house built to receive pregnant women who are drug-users.  She also dreams of buying the house which she calls House of Assistance or any other house in another place.

Doris Hipolito is 54 years old. Eight years ago she obtained her family`s permission to stop working as a teacher (where she received her salary), and dedicate her whole time to save innocent and defenseless lives in the maternal womb.

In everyday life she uses the following sentence ~The powerful can give me power but the babies can give me Paradise~.
