Homeless Bed Program, by Hungry Monk Rescue Truck
Donation protected
Hi!
Mary & Mike here! If you have not heard of our work, Hungry Monk Rescue Truck is a homeless outreach organization working primarily in Ridgewood, Queens and Bushwick, Brooklyn.
We are in the beginning stages of starting a bed program in Ridgewood that will provide a safe place for the homeless to sleep at night, and we hope you can help us make this happen this #GivingTuesday.
Two weeks ago during the first snowstorm of the season, our friend Aerk was sleeping outside in a sleeping bag and froze to death. We held a vigil for him and many of his friends and neighbors came and spoke about how much he meant to them.
Homeless men and women often choose to sleep outside instead of in homeless shelters, because they can be dangerous, crowded, or unfamiliar to a person with mental health issues. Homeless advocates and politicians agree that smaller localized bed programs that can accomodate 10-20 of the same people every night are a better solution for homelessness than large overcrowded shelters.
Our program will give approximately 15 people a place to sleep at night, a meal in the evening and the morning, house chores to have dignity of work and collaboration with others, and access to social service professionals.
New York City offers assistance to organizations and churches who start their own bed programs, but in order to get this project off the ground, we must meet the city’s requirements, including:
-10-20 beds with mattresses and bedding,
-renovating bathrooms,
-installing showers,
-purchasing insurance for the building,
-washer/dryer,
-lockers for each guest,
-hiring security, & more.
Today is #GivingTuesday, and we are setting our goal for $25,000.
That’s only 25 people donating $1000,
Or 250 people donating $100,
Or 2,500 people donating only $10.
Please, if you’re able to donate anything, we’d really appreciate it! It’s already very cold out and we want to get people off the street immediately. If you can’t donate anything, please pass our video and gofundme page to your friends and family.
Thank you for reading, & have a nice holiday season.
With love,
Father Mike Lopez, Mary Houlihan, and everyone at Hungry Monk Rescue Truck
