OUR FARMERS NEED YOUR SUPPORT
Australian farmers are battling to feed their horses on their drought-stricken properties. Hotel owners, Debbie and Jerry Schwartz,
along with their children Dane, Lara and Amber have made it their mission to rescue the horses affected by the drought.
Horses are often sent to sale yards as farmers cant rehome or sell them. The ones who are not sold are sadly send to the abattoirs. These are peoples beloved pets! Horse rescuers are all at capacity and turn horses away due to lack of resources.
We have saved 19 horses so far from near death including a mare with a young foal. ( we named the foal Dane) Most are purebred branded stock horses. Our aim is to save as many as we can. We are currently building new paddocks so we can achieve this. We have found homes for 3 so far and our mission ahead is a long and expensive one.
We acquired our first 7 ( from Gloucester) from actually doing the heartbreaking job of going to the sale and outbidding the slaughterhouses. The remaining horses were given to us by a breeder in Bathurst who simply had no money to feed them. They are mostly 2-3 year olds with a long life ahead of them.
It Costs $5,000 a year per horse just in feed. Some of our horses are so underweight it will take months to get them back to a healthy condition. Our job is to feed them back to health, gain their trust, put them through a rehab programme then finally find them new forever homes. We are microchipping each horse so they never end up at the slaughterhouses. The ones from the sales are still traumatised and two we still cant even touch, Its so heartbreaking. They have a right to live and we are determined to make this happen.
All funds raised will be used directly to buy hay, pay vet and farrier bills etc. Everyone involved at Lovedale Horse Rescue are volunteering so we have no wages only expenses.
Collectively we can change the fate of these loved animals of our farming communities and give them a second chance with your kind support.
Debra Howard from Crowne Plaza Hunter Valley based in Lovedale (who is also a rescue volunteer) has also volunteered her time to manage the distribution of funds to ensure the care of these loved animals.
