Hurricane Relief for PROCOCER in Nicaragua
Donation protected
We are just beginning to understand the devastating impact hurricane Eta and Iota are having on Cooperative Coffees friends and producer partners in Central America. Lives have been lost and people have been displaced. Flooding and landslides have destroyed infrastructure and damaged coffee and other crops on the farm. It will take months to rebuild, all under the context of a COVID pandemic.
The cooperative PROCOCER , located in the Municipios of Jalapa, Murra and Jícaro in Nueva Segovia,Nicaragua, saw the greatest amount of damage to critical infrastructure. The areas around Jícaro were hit particularly hard, with a major landslide in the community of La Jumuyca resulting in the loss of homes and grain fields. There are also reports of massive flooding in areas and significant loss of the corn crop which is the main source of food. Damage to coffee fields was limited, but the destruction of roadways will make it more difficult to move coffee from communities during the upcoming harvest.
